I wasn't trying to imitate Charlotte, honestly!
« on: 23 August, 2010, 10:28:20 pm »
Erm yeah.  Came to Bristol this afternoon to stay with Meegat of this parish before joining some uni friends on their LEJOG attempt for a couple of days in the morning.  She was doing a CycleOut women's ride this evening, so I tagged along.  Foolishly, as I had full touring kit, I requested a not-too-hilly route.  This ended up being the path out to Pill, which was freshly rained-on for the sort of deep muddy puddles that had the little NSTN in the back of my head shrieking in horror.

Lessons learned:

Marathons aren't knobblies.

Mud is wet.

Chainrings are sharp.

Shins have a remarkable amount of blood in them.

The minor injuries unit closes at 8pm.

Recumbents don't qualify for "keep your leg elevated" purposes.

Yeah:

910 stitches!   ::-)

Yikes!
Hugs for Kim!
Its a little bit off-roady that path isn't it?  :-\  I only ride it on my 28" tyres if it's absolutely dry. Even then theres a risk of sticks in your spokes  :(

Kim, I don't mean this in a horrible way but, WOW, that is some impressive injury. I presume the nine stitches were some sort of cable stitch to link up the individual injuries.

Hope it doesn't sting too much.

Was the second photo taken after you had cleaned up or do you have the cleanest chain ring the Bristol side of Swindon?

Ouchy, GWS.

She did spend most of yesterday cleaning things while fettling so it may well have been spotless when it bit her.

Bike is mostly fine.  It was a left-hand bend, at fairly low speed, so the bulk of the impact was taken by my left arm and arse, neither of which have any injury worth photographing and posting to the interweb.

I landed in a groin vs Garmin position - remarkably the bracket seems to be undamaged, though the whole lot is now extremely wonky.  Rear indexing was misbehaving on the ride back, no doubt I'll find out why in due course.  There's a metric shitload of mud all over everything though - you wouldn't believe the amount I've just rinsed out of my shorts.

I had cleaned the entire drivetrain yesterday, and haven't used the big ring all day, so, traces of human flesh aside, it probably is the cleanest this side of Swindon.  I got thoroughly covered in mud when I fell though, so that photo is after cleaning it.

I can't see the photos on my phone but can imagine and sympathise. Surprisingly little blood came out of Charlotte's gash. Are those the paths leading towards the Severn Bridge? We made the mistake of using that route on our lejog and it cost us a tyre.

A sporty boosterism asserts that "pain is weakness leaving the body."

Clearly, it's also blood.  Lots of blood!

Love the zombie apocalypse grin in that first photo.

So after Wowbadgering, we now have "Doing a Charlotte" as a more specific form of "Doing a Nutty" ? ;D

Chaps, can we keep to a strict minimum quota of bloody photographs and scars please?

Hope things heal up soon Kim.  I'm glad to hear you saved the bike from any damage by cushioning it with your body. :-\
Actually, it is rocket science.

It's looking like the LEJOGers are running the best part of a day behind schedule (something to do with Devon and Cornwall being hilly), so our plan to meet up and ride together as far as Telford (getting me home in time to wash all my kit before Mildenhall) wouldn't have worked anyway.  I've booked a train back to Brum on Wednesday morning, so might see if we can meet up briefly tomorrow evening.

Bad luck, matey.  Obviously the machine was not impressed with that path.  Did you not hear it mutter "Listen chum, you drop me and I'll bite you."?
