What is that word?
« on: 20 May, 2019, 07:18:49 pm »
My partner and I have spent the last half hour trawling through online Thesaurus to find the word, which is like ecosystem or environment, which people use when they talk about Apple or Google.

“I don’t want to be trapped into the Apple ****”

Please help us, we’re going mad!

Don’t people use ‘ecosystem’, or OS?

Those are all used, but it’s not quite the one we are looking for... but very close to ecosystem.

Argh, it’s driving me mad!

Platform or Ecosystem for me
Although if it's Apple then Religion/Cult is equally valid.

'Walled garden.'

Whether it's a bad thing depend on your perspective. At least with a wall you don't have to worry about local drunk taking a dump in your flower bed on his way home from the pub.

Ecosystem's the word I'd use in that sense:  Macbook, OSX, iTunes, IOS, Facetime.  Platform if I was talking about, say, OSX or IOS on appropriate hardware that Facetime runs on.

I might say universe if I was considering a wider issue, like the conventions for terminating lines in text files.  OSX is part of the Unix-verse in that sense.

As a *nix jibbler I tend to reserve 'environment' for environment variables, though it would be perfectly reasonable to use it to describe, say, the flavours of computers on a LAN.

The word I actually use in these cases has come to mind.

It's "bollocks"

'Shit' works quite well, too.

As in "I've got to do X using Windows shit"

Bollocks and shit seem suitable words too, but not what I am thinking.

Sadly a night of sleep (dreaming about having ticks latched on to my feet - lovely) did not offer the word.

Maybe in a few months I will read it again somewhere and PING.

Interesting how many synonyms we have given above for the restricted systems of our gadget suppliers.
