Went to the LBS and they stock a lovely aluminium Merida racer, full Ultegra 20-sp and Shimano wheelset for £899 (£800 if you pay cash!) ; great value for money.

Allegedly Merida make frames for some of the world's biggest bike manufacturers, but they won't say who! They do look good though and the MTBs get good reviews in the press.
