Mountain Biking - How not to do it
« on: 14 April, 2008, 11:29:44 am »
On learning that there are a lot of bridlepaths near Box Hill, we decided to go and explore them this weekend.

On a road bike.

With road tyres.

On a frame that has a three-inch toe-overlap.

Fixed.

With a 65" gear.

 ::-)

That was fun! Fortunately, some bits were so muddy that I was able to slither down with my legs locked and the back wheel either sliding in the mud, or not on the ground at all. I only fell off once! :thumbsup:

Think I need a more appropriate bike the next time I go that way.

On learning that there are a lot of bridlepaths near Box Hill, we decided to go and explore them this weekend.

The bridlepath from the tower on top of Leith hill to the road was entertaining on a road bike with 20mm slicks. Felt like my arms were goign to come out of their sockets.. (after carrying the bike up the footpath from the road nearest the tower - in road shoes with look cleats.)

Not on fixed though

My road bike's claim to fame is that it was the first bike to be ridden along the Fair Oaks Pools single track section of the "Follow The Dog" trail at Cannock Chase.

Made it to the end as well, although the BB did unscrew on the way home  :(

Slidey slidey!
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Good, innit?  Fixed off road is a great fun - and a seriously good workout.  Get yourself some proper tyres for when it's muddy and you'll be laughin'!

Good for upper body/front brake workouts, on the steep descents :)
