Orange/white striped road on OS
« on: 25 March, 2019, 02:35:22 pm »
Spotted a short stretch of pretty rural B-road (in NE-Wales) with this coding (the rest of the B-road is the normal orange).

Is this a new thing? Or something I have missed for 40 years?!?

(this is on a webby version - not paper maps )

I think it's a narrow B road with passing places. Is this a 1:25000 map?

Edit: here's an A-road equivalent. http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=289500&Y=943500&A=Y&Z=120

Having ridden down that very road, this seems very plausible.

'Narrow road with passing places' is what it shows up as on the Legend in OSMaps online.

If you go West a bit to Strath Naver you'll see an example of a singletrack B road in OS form

I found one here: http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=318612&y=353284&z=120&sv=318612,353284

I've ridden that particular one and it's just a standard country singletrack road with passing places.

Something you have missed for 40 years.  I have roads marked that way from a 1960's map. Just looked at some older maps and it was present on maps as far back as 1919.

Railways too. But only on large scale maps (roads and rail).

The meaning of the line colours and styles changed at some point, not quite linked directly to the MOT numbering scheme being introduced.
Prior to the 1940s editions the roads were coloured based on their suitability for different types of traffic.

Unfortuantely the oldest map I have to hand is a 1950s seventh series which uses much the same key as the landranger series.

The meaning of the line colours and styles changed at some point ...

From memory they changed around 1974 when we went from red covered inch to a mile maps to magenta covered 2cm to a km maps.

First Series Metric Landrangers were just the old 1 inch map base enlarged.
I think the A - Red, B-Brown, Yellow, colouring came in in the 1940s reprints of the New Popular Editions.

Hold on I should be able to get the Key from the NLS map images

Map of Yell - 1931 printing
https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400491

Colours used to indicate the quality of the road

Same Map 1948
https://maps.nls.uk/view/91526616
Colours used to show the MOT classification of the road

And when I say the same map, it really is the same base map, very little resurveying and revisions were done between the 1920s and 1940s printings.

Note that the English new popular edition key was slightly different to the Scottish one.
https://maps.nls.uk/view/74466876

The Seventh Series followed on from the NPEs and was based on a complete resurvey of GB (previously the scottish and english surveys were separate)
https://maps.nls.uk/view/91549015

Note the slight rejig of the key which is much closer to the one used on the Metric successor.
