Ah, might do actually. Sorry - am away from home and typing from memory. I name the track in GPXeditor so file and track names are the same. Probably.

Quite.  I mean, I'm not ruling out the possibility of it using the filename in the case of an unnamed track or something, but since it does the Right Thing when given GPX files containing more than one element, it's not relying on the filename alone.

The lesson for Banjo here is that the name of each track is usually embedded in the data of a GPX file, so don't expect renaming the file to affect how they're displayed when uploaded to a GPS receiver.
