Title: Best drinking / partying songs
Post by: pcolbeck on 15 July, 2010, 02:19:09 pm
My favourite is Graivty's Gone by the Drive by Truckers though it's more about the after mouth than the actual drinking:

I went stumbling through the fog trying to find a reason for the things I told her
She woke up sunny side down and I was still thinking I was too proud to flip her over

....

So I'll meet you at the bottom if there really is one
They always told me when you hit it you'll know it
But I've been falling so long it's like gravity's gone and I'm just floating

after mouth

Sorry, don't want to come over all grammar nazi on you, but I have to ask... Is that a deliberate pun? (It's a brilliant one if it is.) Or is it an eggcorn (http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/) for aftermath?

To get back on topic: The Drinking Song by Josef Locke (http://www.joseflocke.co.uk/)

Whilst I would like to claim it as a good pun it was simply sloppy typing and it being two legitimate words Firefox's spell checker didn't complain.

Oh yes!

And "Body Of An American". And "Irish Rover". And... well, most Pogues songs, really.

I've heard my brother's family singing a Norwegian drinking song ("Hi Skol"?) of which I understand nothing other than that you have to be very drunk to sing it.

Not the Hagar the horrible one from the Skol lager adverts then?

Rest of vikings: "Skol, Skol, Skol, Skol,
Skol, Skol, Skol, Skol,
Skol, Skol, Skol, Skol,
... Why aren't you singing our drinking song, Hagar?"

Hagar: "I've forgotten the words"

EDIT: Erk! hadn't noticed Charlotte had already posted the YouTube link to it (Oh and it appears it wasn't Hagar that forgot the words)

Just remembered "Talking ThunderBird Blues" Townes van Zandt. If you were a teenager in the early 80s it might strike a chord (or probably bring back nasty memories).

Among the strangest things I ever heard
Was when a friend of mine said "man, let's get some thunderbird"
I said "what's that? " he just started to grin
Slobbered on his shirt, his eyes got dim
He said "you got fifty-nine cents? "

I said "yeah, I got a dollar, but don't be a smart-aleck
I ain't gonna spend it on no indian relic"
And he said "thunderbird's not an old indian trinket,
It's a wine, man, you take it home and drink it."
I said "it sure don't sound like wine to me"
And he said he'd bet me the change from my dollar

We hustled on down to the nearest u-tate-um
The guy wanted my id, I whipped her out and showed him
He got a green bottle from the freezing vault
My friend started doing backward somersaults
Through the cottage cheese

Took it back to his house, started drinkin'
Pretty soon I set in to thinkin'
"man, this thunderbird tastes yummy, yummy, yummy
And I know it's doing good things to my tummy, tum..., t..."
It's so you reason when your on that crap

Got a few more bottles, chugged them down
I pulled myself up off the ground
Decided I go see my dearest sweet wife
Who met me at the door with a carving knife
Said "get them damn grape peel from between your teeth."

I could see we're gonna have a little misunderstanding
I said "dear, I better get in touch with you later"
She said "forget it, man, you're never touchin' me again!"

Now I've seen the light and heard the word
And I'm staying away from that ol' dirty thunderbird
A message come from heaven radiant, and fine,
All I drink now is communion wine
Six days a week

My favourite is called "Serious Drinking"

My favourite couplet in it is:

So what if I'm drowning my sorrows?
It ain't my fault that they can't swim

But I'm bias 'cause I wrote it - 20+ years ago, admittedly

I know a Russian drinking song that I once learned when massively hammered, so much so that it only resides in the Drunk Memory levels of my brain.

If I start singing it, it's generally a clue that I am incredibly drunk, even by my own "two bottles of wine is merely a beer chaser" level of liver poking idiocy (to be fair, most people will have buggered off by then because the "I want to snog everyone" drunk level often kicks in before the Drunken Russian Singing level of insobriety).

If I'm really bad I do the 'Evil Jimmy Saville' impression.

No, it's a proper song with Norwegian words and evryfink. It's all down to my brother's wife's twin sister having lived in Norway for many years so my bro & fam go over there frequently to visit them, either in Oslo or their ex-Olympic log cabin in Lillehammer, get drunk and learn silly songs about it.

It's only a short song but it has a tuneless charm to it. There may or may not be a line in it about pining for the fjords.

I was taught a Finnish drinking song by a Norwegian.

Scene: Me and Per, in a bar, drink having taken.

Per: "I will teach you a Finnish drinking song"

Me:  <Looks puzzled, yet enthusiastic>

Per, picks up glass of aquavit/other strong spirit:

"Now!"

Drink vanishes.

As my mate Andy likes to say "This isn't a round he's buying".

Incidentally, having the track 'I really Like Girls' by him infect my head as an earworm on one ride I am still convinced improved my finishing time by about an hour.

Bizarrely, I've found the words and a partial translation on the penultimate page of a powerpoint for a 2006 course in Flow Cytometry.

My favourite is Gravity's Gone by the Drive by Truckers...

An even better one by the DBT, I think, is Goddamn Lonely Love.

"So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take all of what you got
To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love"
