My favourite is called "Serious Drinking"

My favourite couplet in it is:

So what if I'm drowning my sorrows?
It ain't my fault that they can't swim

But I'm bias 'cause I wrote it - 20+ years ago, admittedly
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

I know a Russian drinking song that I once learned when massively hammered, so much so that it only resides in the Drunk Memory levels of my brain.

If I start singing it, it's generally a clue that I am incredibly drunk, even by my own "two bottles of wine is merely a beer chaser" level of liver poking idiocy (to be fair, most people will have buggered off by then because the "I want to snog everyone" drunk level often kicks in before the Drunken Russian Singing level of insobriety).

If I'm really bad I do the 'Evil Jimmy Saville' impression.

I've heard my brother's family singing a Norwegian drinking song ("Hi Skol"?) of which I understand nothing other than that you have to be very drunk to sing it.

No, it's a proper song with Norwegian words and evryfink. It's all down to my brother's wife's twin sister having lived in Norway for many years so my bro & fam go over there frequently to visit them, either in Oslo or their ex-Olympic log cabin in Lillehammer, get drunk and learn silly songs about it.

It's only a short song but it has a tuneless charm to it. There may or may not be a line in it about pining for the fjords.

I was taught a Finnish drinking song by a Norwegian.

Scene: Me and Per, in a bar, drink having taken.

Per: "I will teach you a Finnish drinking song"

Me:  <Looks puzzled, yet enthusiastic>

Per, picks up glass of aquavit/other strong spirit:

"Now!"

Drink vanishes.

As my mate Andy likes to say "This isn't a round he's buying".

Incidentally, having the track 'I really Like Girls' by him infect my head as an earworm on one ride I am still convinced improved my finishing time by about an hour.

What a brilliant line! I hope you don't mind if I use that the next time my mother asks me why I'm drinking so much...

Bizarrely, I've found the words and a partial translation on the penultimate page of a powerpoint for a 2006 course in Flow Cytometry.

Against my better instincts, there's a bad part of me that wants to see this.

My favourite is Gravity's Gone by the Drive by Truckers...

An even better one by the DBT, I think, is Goddamn Lonely Love.

To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamn lonely love"
