Electricity power meter displays
« on: 06 November, 2009, 08:40:26 pm »
Does anyone here have any recommendations for one of those power meter things that allegedly display the current (apologies) power consumption in one's house ?

Many thanks.

You were right first time - they measure current, not power consumption - and then multiply by a user entered voltage to give you an approximation of power.

Good enough for most purposes though.

I have one of these:
Energy Saving Smart Meter - Efergy Elite: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Does the job, and stores a few days/weeks/months of history.

The ones that clip round the cable are so inaccurate (no accuracy figures are even quoted unless you're drawing really big currents) that you'll never notice if that mobile phone charger is left on.

Correct - but they are not really intended for that.

Make sure you use their online energy tracker and enter readings every month - it is a really useful service, if you don't already that is.

How does that connect to the system? Does it clip round a wire somewhere or plug in? The "product details" don'y explain. Thanks.

Correct - clips over the live wire as it comes out of the meter.
