Also...it wasn't really him in the Noddy Holder urban legend.

Just terrific.

He was just as good without the drugs, too.  Bob Dylan wanted to be Little Richard and I suspect Elvis did, too.  But the gig was already taken.

Great shame, but as others have said, what an innings. He didn't exactly 'conform' did he.

I remember seeing him on Channel 4's 'White Room'  and being amused by Robert Palmer's reaction as he watches from the back of the stage; he's clearly impressed. Well it is a knockout performance. I found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kaCa5mMajg Blimey, that's nearly 25 years ago!

Whereas Elvis was playing the part of the rock and roll star, Little Richard always was one.

Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Elton John all played with him at some point in their early careers.

I was listening to that. Incredible.

Thing is, I like listening to Gideon Coe in bed, because the tunes he plays - and his voice - are generally conducive to relaxation.

If there's one thing Little Richard is not, it's relaxing. Listening to that medley of tracks felt like an onslaught of relentless power and energy. I have to admit I've never really appreciated his work, always felt he was a bit of a one-trick pony, but listening to that medley made me wish I'd seen him live. Absolutely astonishing.

And yes, he is a one-trick pony, but if you're only going to have one trick, that's a pretty good one to have. He is the pure essence of rock'n'roll. And if ever anyone was in any doubt that the point of all rock'n'roll is sex, he completely dispels that. You can almost smell the sex in his performances.

Anyway, that was my night's sleep completely ruined. But at least it was in a good cause.

(Although, I seem to recall reading somewhere that John Lennon made a similar claim about himself and the manager of one of the Hamburg clubs in which The Beatles learned their trade.)

It is alleged that one of the reasons for Brian Epstein becoming The Beales' manager was that he fancied John Lennon.

...indeed, and Lennon also claimed to have given Epstein a helping hand on at least one occasion, when they went on holiday together to Spain.

In a Whatsapp conversation about Little Richard, someone posted this:

Apparently a big influence on him. I'd never heard of her but... you can see the connection!

Cant believe you missed out on her up to now. She was brilliant.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

It's clear that Elton John owes her something too. At least in the fashion stakes:
