Penny Newsflash!

Quote
Veteran Cycle Club members and their friends are invited to the Redbridge Cycling Centre (a.k.a. Hog Hill Circuit), Forest Road, Hainault, Ilford, IG6 3HP, for an afternoon of friendly racing on pre-1975 machines.

In case you have seen the place and think I must be joking, please note that we're only using the south (flat) circuit!

Those who attended the Eastway events a few years back will know the emphasis is on fun and letting off steam rather than serious competition. The programme for the day will hopefully include a time-trial handicap (handicap based on combined age of machine and rider; bring your oldest bike for greatest advantage!), races for hub-geared, rod-braked and pre-1940s machines, and a round of the National Solid-Tyred Championship. Children's and youths' races will be included, depending on the attendance.

There will be a charge of £3 per entrant for the hire of the track, plus £2 per attendant for one-day The League International (TLI) membership for insurance purposes.

For directions see Redbridge Cycling Centre: http://www.vision-rcl.org.uk/redbridge_cycle_centre.html, for any other details, please contact Patrick Trench on 020-8529 1263 or patrick_trench@hotmail.com.

Kat and I will be racing on vintage machines, loaned to us for the day by a VCC member.

Come along and support us!  This is going to be Very Serious Racing  :D

I went to a VCC event like this a couple of years ago, where they raced some Ordinaries round Herne Hill Velodrome at break neck speed! Quite an impressive sight. If I can get a few hours free I'll try and get along.

That would be brilliant, Erron!

A bit more detail - we're racing for a cup first endowed in 1910 after a collection was taken up amongst Penny enthusiasts who realised that the day of the high bicycle was coming to an end.  This year will be the 100th anniversary of that first race and for a one mile sprint (with a rolling start) it's going to be hotly contested.

Kat and I are on pre-1910 machines, a Rudge and a Singer, 53" and 52".

It's going to be awesome  8)

Think this is the meet that we & Zipperhead & a few others went to at Brooklands.  He got some great photos then.  I got some photos too.

The racing was good but reasonably lighthearted.

That day there was also a Sinclair C5 race, and rides up the Test Hill for Choppers & C5s, but not pennies :(

While I'd love to see this, and do plan to be passing through That London on Saturday after resolving some Unstarted Business with Whitstable, I have a prior engagement in middle earth with CrinklyLion and some CAKE.

Good luck!

I presume they will not be using the entire Hog Hill circuit for the penny race, just the top loop. I can imagine it going to the last rider to fall off at the base of the descent otherwise.

I bloody hope it's the small circuit.  At the very least, if it's not I shall stand a good chance of becoming this autumn's comedy YouTube sensation...

My bold. So you won't have to honk a penny over the b*stard hill after all. Although I think you should try anyway. ;)

[edit] there's some serious bends on this course - what are pennies like in corners?

Looks like it.  We're leaving Ealing at 10am and will be cycling over from Upminster, 'cos you can't take a bike on the Central line...

And a thunderingly good ride it was, too!  Kat did pretty well, too.  The winner shot off at a blistering pace from the start, nearly blew up on the last rise, but held on ahead of the second guy.  C was in a strong third from early on.

Zipperhead may have some good photos.  Mine are a bit underwhelming cause I didn't get close enough and wasn't thinking well.

Maybe you should get onto the RRA and see if there are any high wheeler place to place records you could break?
