YouTube age verification: scam or genuine?

Polar Bear:
Whatever it might be there is absolutely no way that I am giving copies of my passport or using my credit card to verify my age.  There isn't anything that is interesting enough for me to do so.

I don't think that there is anything so unmissable that I will be regretting my decision.

I imagine online grumble would experience quite a rapid downturn if it required ID.

Shirley it's in the companies' interests to a) have an age verification process (so they may be seen to be 'doing something') and that  b) is easily circumvented (so everyone can still get their fill of goat pr0n/h4xx0ring/QUILTBAGing/gnus/boozahol/conspiraloonery etc)
