Forward planning: Heading westwards next week! Calling all in the west of the county and Essex Borders [as we call Hertfordshire  ;D]

How adventurously west do Withamites want to go? Beyond the Ongar Road [B184] there are some good pubs: The Cock at Hatfield Broad Oak and The George at Little Hallingbury spring to mind...Might have to call an early night with 20+ miles home?

Slightly nearer would be the Axe and Compasses at Aythorpe Roding or the Lion and Lamb at Little Canfield.

A good place to meet up might be The Compasses, Littley Green, for a swift pint, maybe??

Little Hallingbury is about as far as last night for me, about 65km tying for a nice ride out and a direct route home so probably on the outer limits of a school night unless we opt for earlier starts and departs.

Surely you already know the answer to this one Ted.....!
Just remember back to OD's suggestion of visiting one another's locals and then his no show for the next 2 weeks including the first week which was his suggestion

Just noticed that ACME may be heading out West next Wednesday, so I'll keep an eye on this thread - would be good to meet up with you chaps for a beer, assuming I can get away from work at a sensible time. Can't go too mad (distance or beer) with the Brimstone looming the following weekend

I should be OK for next Wednesday.  Should we set off at 7pm as opposed to 7:30pm?

Be good to see you Bernster - train assisted return? If OD is around the we'll go to the Cock at HBO, otherwise the George at Lt Hallingbury. Perhaps you could meet somewhere en-route too? [I'm guessing the Compasses won't work for you??]

You're looking at about 25 miles from Witham to HBO, with a short stop at the Compasses for a pint...? Leave before 22:30 to get home before midnight...

Forward planning, I like it :-)

What times would you aim to be at the Compasses and then HBO? If I can get back from London in good time I will aim to meet up at the Compasses.

Eddington: 133 miles    Max square: 43x43

Well, depends on when we leave Witham; 7 or 7:30 are the options.  The Compasses LG is about 45 minutes from Witham.

Littley Green is probably a bit too far over for me (unless I can get away really early), so might be easier to meet up for a beer at HBO or Little Hallingbury, and then play things by ear on the way back with the option of a train if required.

I hope we are aiming for The Cock at HBO as it'll be another Essex Good Beer Guide pub I can tick off.
