1000km for 2014
« on: 18 August, 2013, 08:33:26 pm »
Anybody got plans for a calendar 1000km next year?

Ages ago I thought about an Essex to Wales and back 600 DIY, which came to nought, but I was thinking a North Sea to Irish Sea and back 1000km would be about right, maybe a Welsh start too?

I'd be happy to help with planning and maybe running a control at the East Anglian end......

Was hoping there would be one, just in case PBP pre-qualifying (like 2010) made it a worthwhile thing to do...
Then Blacksheep's Scottish lunacy appeared - and promptly sold out.

Andy Corless is planning a jaunt to Fort William & Back, I believe.

Thanks Postie, it would be of interest, were it not for the fact that we scraped in under the wire for the 1300...

There's still time to DNS that one!  :demon:

Now, should I be flattered to be confused with Postie? ???

They don't clash ... Close to each other, but not a clash ...

(And there was a thread on the Tournebut event a few months ago. Certainly been on my radar since then.)

Thanks for the link Plodder.

The 400 looks excellent as well and seems to compliment the 1000 for back-to-back rides.  Extremely tempting

Happy to run a control for any 1000 heading over to the west of the country.

I'd be happy to run a start control for a ride from Preston. I live a mile from the cluster of hotels and supermarkets just off the M6, which is connected directly to the railway station in Preston by a picturesque cycle track.
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ll=53.721231,-2.670751&spn=0.000013,0.006212&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.721247,-2.670857&panoid=1_QceE4Dw_NuzuKyUAdwng&cbp=12,181.47,,0,1.63

It's where the M6, M65 and M61 converge, and there are railway stations on the West Coast Main Line, the Yorkshire line and to Manchester within 3 miles. It's possible to get a train direct from Manchester airport, and stay in Preston city centre as well.

I heard rumours several months ago, but there is no real indication this was anything more than wishful thinking.  I hope it is, but would understand if it was not.

I've heard of the proposed hardcore northern 1000s, but maybe there's room for something civilised for soft southerners, along the lines of El Supremo's....

I am looking into a 1000 that goes from Surrey/Sussex to Cornwall via ancient monuments and rugged national parks.  Won't be a 2014 event though.

'tis one and the same.  But I aspire (perhaps unrealistically) to this (and my 400s and 600s) having "facilities" (halls, feed stations and YHAs) and not being "clover" shaped (but would be "out and back" because a loop would not be logistically feasible for anything other than an X-rated 1000).  I reckon it will take at least two years to put in place.  2016 looks most likely, given 2015 will probably see me run a PBP SR out of the area and 2014 will be an opportunity to test out various route ideas at a leisurely pace.  Quite complicated this putting on new events, but worth getting right rather than rushing them out imo.

Just a quick hop over the water, the Vanmarsenille brothers are organising their Belgian Borders 1000 again next year. In 2012 the start was near Ghent.

And it goes through the Antwerp Cycle Tunnel!

(with a bin for Jane, too).

Any idea when it will be, Ivo? That might be worth the ferry fare (as long as I can convince a couple of others to share a cabin).

Last time it was in may, I haven't heard any clear details for next year yet.

I'd love to do this, hope it doesn't clash with BCM.
