Title: What was the first film you watched ? ETA at the Cinema
Post by: hatler on 26 May, 2022, 08:32:56 am
Time to reveal a broad indication of your age.

Jungle Book

Sutton. It was my birthday treat.

I still remember my consternation at coming out of the cinema and it was dark.

First one I can remember would be Lady and the Tramp, at a drive-in. I'm guessing that would have been about 1972ish

Thunderball, taken by my Grandparents, at the even then soon to be defunct local cinema, which became a Liptons about 3 years later.

The Jungle Book.  Apparently it's racist now

The Jungle Book too. We went home at the intermission because thought that was the end of the movie.

Everything is racist now, it's a busy industry fault mining the past.

The Jungle Book too. My main recollection was the vastness of the cinema (this was long before multiple screens). Though actually it was the middle of the three cinemas in town.

101 Dalmations. It was a birthday treat for a school friend, I was probably 8 or 9.

Basil The Great Mouse Detective, in some impressive west-end cinema or other.  The interwebs inform me that this came out in summer of 1986, which would be consistent with my younger brother reaching an age where he could keep quiet for the duration of a film.

Probably saw other films on the telly in the year or so before that, but likely not the whole way through, and nothing that's memorable enough to distinguish from the endless repeats of the following decade.

I think it was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Upstairs at the Regent, Horley. Standing for the National Anthem. Intermission at the point where the car flies off the cliff.
Like hatler, going in during daylight and coming out in darkness was weird.

Every Saturday after the great Jungle Book mishap, our collective mothers would send me and my tribe of 1000 cousins to the ABC in Heanor for the matinee so they could smoke and gossip without constantly having to yell at us. We'd be fueled up on 5kg of broken biscuits from the market and as much Kia-Ora as the cinema could produce. I wouldn't have wanted to be the usher.

According to my mother, it was the original West Side Story and we have to leave before the end because I was making too much  noise. In my defence, I believe I was about six months old at the time.

I suppose at some point I should watch the rest of it to see what happened.

The oldest film I recall is Paint Your Wagon, although I think I might have got to the cinema to see some Disney creations but I don’t remember any specific visit. I also remember going to see Live and Let Die at the cinema while on holiday on Guernsey.

The first film I want to see sans parents was Jaws with a chap from school.

These are strong contenders for the first film I saw all the way through on the telly.

Probably "Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier" in 1955 - one of my primary school friends used to go to the pictures twice a week with his Dad - I used to go with them now and again.

First film on my own was "Seven Cities of Gold" - also 1955 - my father left me there having bought the ticket and I went to my uncle's shop opposite the cinema afterwards to await my father's return from work.

Not only was it long ago, but I were very young (older siblings see).  It was one of:
Snow White/Jungle Book/Star Wars.  I think Star Wars (which I think was a repeat showing as Empire was already out at the time).

20,000 leagues under the sea. Not a reliable marker for my age as it was some time in the mid to late seventies at the Lewisham Odeon. I wasn't phased at all by leaving in darkness, but to this day I am moderately disorientated when leaving any cinema in daylight.

All other cinemas since have been disappointingly small.

It goes without saying that the cinema we so graced with our Kia-Ora and biscuit sticky paws is now what appears to be the most dismal block of flats I could imagine (so says streetview). It's like my childhood is being consumed by concrete, tarmac and dismal architecture.

I had memories of seeing Button Moon (would have been around the same time?) but a quick Google shows there was no such film. ???

I'm also pretty sure my mother smuggled me in to see Jaws, and I must have been very little. I'm not entirely sure my brain isn't making this one up. That's the only time I remember my mother going to the cinema, I think she pretty much gave up doing stuff when she got married, other than having children and smoking I suppose.

At st custards we used to get fillums shown in the Assembly Hall.  The first one I can remember seeing there was The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, which was a bit of an eye-opener for an 8 y/o.  Don't remember going to an actual cinema before that.

I remember my Gran taking me to the ABC Streatham to see Where Eagles Dare when it first came out when I was about 10.
"Broadsword calling Danny Boy. Broadsword calling Danny Boy. Do you read me? Over."
In which Clint Eastwood as Lt. Schaeffer single-handedly wipes out most of the Waffen SS.
Gran loved it.

ABC Streatham (I believe the Art Deco frontage is Grade II listed) has for a while been a block of apartments, with a carpet vendor occupying the Grade II bit.

No, but the one in Uckfield I used to go to after the Crowborough one shut still does, an that’s some 50 years on.

ETA: It was the Regent in CRowborough, now offices and a bank.

I'm reasonably confident that it was the Ritz Cinema in Billericay (1938-1971) for The Young Ones with Bloody Cliff. That came out in 1961 so I would have been about 7 or 8 I think.

The first of the Star Wars (which I think is now called episode 4, for inexplicable reasons) at the cinema in Elgin.
We lived in a small village called Burghead, some 10 miles away, at the time.
Going to the cinema was Not A Thing we did, so this was a bit of a revelation.

The one I was in closed when I was about 11, became a bingo hall, then reopened as a cinema in the '90s. According to streetview it's now a nightclub, but that's probably out of date too.

The first two live action films I saw were Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. I have no idea what order, though. I was convinced Julie Andrews was in every film for a while.
I also remember going to see the Disney Snow White which gave my sister nightmares (most things did), but that may have been a little later.

The local flea pit now appears to be a gym. The old Gaumont is now the Mayflower Theatre. I have no idea what happened to the Oden, the ABC or the Classic.

I was going to object that they always called it Episode 4 for inexplicable reasons, but it seems that started with the 1981 re-release.

I didn't see Star Wars in the cinema until the late 90s, when the pooing dinosaur edition came out.

The first film I saw in the Cinema was Disney Cinderella. A rainy day on holiday in Tenby.  The second was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The intermission was the scariest thing ever in cinema. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang runs down the slope to the gap between the cliffs then. Red Screen and the cinema curtains close.

The first film I saw without my parents was Waterloo. The Odeon, Cardiff Queen Street. With my brother and his friend. In 1970 I was eight years old and didn't really follow what was going on apart at the end of the confusing battle our side won.

I have never liked complicated films. My favourite line in the recent Claude Van Damme Amazon prime series.  The chief villain says something like "Stop stop, don't all attack him at once, its confusing. Attack him one by one"

I was lucky when I grew up. Lots of cinemas in Cardiff in the 60s and 70s.

Three cinemas on Queen street.

The Odeon, The Olympia (became the ABC with three small screens(your main telly is bigger than the smallest screen) and the best cinema The Capitol with its very big wide screen.

Then we had the cinemas in the suburbs.

In the west.  Mill lane Ely, near where I lived there was the Regent.  That only showed Saturday morning matinees and old films in the summer holidays. The Avenue at the bottom of Wilson Road Ely became a Rolls Royce and other very expensive cars dealership before I realised it used to be a cinema.

In the east on Rumney Hill was the County.

On North road, Gabalfa was the Plaza.

In Rhiwbina the Monico. Probably where I saw most films. The last to close. Lasted up to the age of the multiplex.

There were small cinemas on City Road and in Grange town but I can not remember them showing any films.

I nearly missed one. The Prince of Wales. Used to show porn flicks. I was too young to understand the titles. Never saw anything there. I have been inside it after it closed. Can not remember why.

Would have been 68 or 69, Bambi at the Warrington Odeon. But I also have very vivid memories (trauma?) Of the wizard of Oz around the same time. The odeon is now a Wetherspoons pub according to google maps ( I don't live there anymore).

Yes, Theatr Clwyd in Mold for me. Just checked online and it's still going (as the name suggests, it was always a theatre as well as showing films).

ETA maybe I did actually see Button Moon, but it was a play of some sort rather than a film...

The Cat from Outer Space. I remember it well. It was at the old Odeon cinema in town before it closed (after a fire) and reopened many years later.

Google tells me that was in 1978. The second must have been Watership Down (also 1978) as that was at the new cinema, which of course was demolished some years later after.... a fire.

Nothing seems to burn down anymore, not like the good old days!

Nothing seems to burn down anymore, not like the good old days!

The Studio 6 and 7, opposite the Odeon in Lewisham was demolished and used as parking. You wouldn't imagine the arson attack on the attendant's booth to have been particularly spectacular, but the fact that it seemed to be used as a propane storage facility livened things up.

Double bill of Gregory's Girl and Chariots of Fire.

Looking at the release dates it's possible it was a birthday treat to go to the pictures with my parents (I think they wanted to see CofF), though as a soon-to-be 7 year old I didn't know what to make of GG. I see it's now got a 12 rating - don't think they existed back then.

The cinema closed down a few weeks later to be reincarnated as a snooker hall, so that was my only trip to the flicks in the town where I was brought up.

st custards assembly hall was still there in 2013 when I was a volunteer at the Pocklington control on LEL.  The Ritz - the town's sticky-floored fleapit of a cinema – got turned into a slot-machine museum by Max Gresham's dad circa 1983 and closed in 1994, but was subsequently reborn as the Arts Centre, which is still going as a cinema/theatre/music/comedy venue.

I'm another "Jungle Book" I think at the Gaumont in Reading.  Which is now a church.

I was very excited when the curtains opened to show the adverts, and then opened even wider when the actual film started. I remember being entranced by the moving patterns made by the cigarette smoke interacting on the light from the projector.  All the smokers had to sit on the left hand side of the enormous single screen cinema.

As mentioned, the ABC (I think) in Heanor (it's a place, I didn't make it up) is now a block of those typically cheerless prison-windowed fuckhutches. A break I suppose from the metastasizing housing estates and retail parks that have claimed much else of my childhood. At least my grandparent's council house is still there, though the tidy gardens etc. have gone, and the estate now looks like a manky car scrapyard.

The Comancheros starring John Wayne at the New Coronet, Didcot 1962-ish - with my dad who was a big JW fan. He fell asleep and started snoring loudly but woke up before the crowd turned on him - his upper dentures falling out saved him! I shrank and hid on the floor.
