Spurs?  Long time ago.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Wow, you may have put this in the wrong thread.  Jimmy's son played for Southend, so talent isn't always genetic!

Spurs?  Long time ago.

Not so long that his phenomenal ability has been forgotten.  Whilst with Spurs he scored four hat-tricks in a season and three in another and is still, I believe, their leading goal-scorer.  He is up there with Brian Clough - two players who make modern players' tallies look feeble.

John White to Danny Blanchflower during a game : "Greaves is again standing on the half way line doing nothing."
Blanchflower replied, "...and when you score 40 goals in a season you can stand up there and do nothing with him!".

I did like his comment on seeing Brian Clough thumping a pitch invader, along the lines of “That’s the first time I've actually seen the shit hitting the fan!”

I do hope he really said that.  It's a terrific quote.  It's a shame if they didn't get on together.  They did play in the same team for England.  It might be envy - Greaves's record was phenomenal: 2 goals in every 3 games, and all in the top division.  Cloughie managed pretty much a goal a game and had about 250 before Bury's goalkeeper ended his career.  Most of these were in the second division, from which he was picked for England, when playing for MIDDLESBROUGH. (or possibly Sunderland)

Whatever, it's still a great quote, from one of the two best players mentioned in this post.

RIP Jimmy Greaves.

God obviously liked Greavesie, hence the thunderbolt for poor John White?
