Shit. That's a shock.

Suspected heart attack.

Crikey. I'd missed that one.

Heart attack as well - it was on the BBC text news at breakfast.

I read the BBC's tribute/obit to Rod Marsh this morning and they included a tribute tweeted by Shane.  Both were great players to watch.

74 is a half-decent age to get to but 52 is a bloody shame.

Incredible player. So many career highlights. The pinnacle being shagging Liz Hurley....

Shane Warne did live life to the full in his 52 years, but it is still a huge shock to see him go.  Not only was he a brilliant bowler, so often he pulled out his best when it was most needed.

I was living in Sydney the day that Marsh, Lillee, and Greg Chappell announced their retirement.  It was a huge hole in the Australian team, although it did allow the likes of Bob Holland and Greg Matthews a longer run in the Australian team.

One forgets how these guys age. I would never have recognised Gatting as he has become. He's 3 years younger than I am.

Had the pleasure of seeing him play a few times. Always an air of expectation for every ball bowled and then relief when the batsman survived it. Gave his all with bat and ball, so entertaining.

Dreadful news and taken well before his time.

He was no monkey with the bat either, recall watching him play a one day in Port Elizabeth and he added about 40 runs against some pretty hostile SA bowling.

Aussie daughter tells me he was ever-present on television, possibly the most recognisable face of Aussie sport, having advertising contracts galore.

I remember him fronting some nicotine replacement patch/gum ads in Oz. He was paid handsomely to say how great they were and how they helped him quit the snouts. Midway through the campaign he was seen chuffing away behind the pavillion live on TV.  The ads were pulled immediately and his fee cancelled  ;D

Do you know when that was? Aussie daughter's job is a senior position in an anti-cancer charity... ;)

Wow and Bobb, do you remember the then Southampton manager, Lawrie McMenemy doing an ad. for the non-alcoholic, non-drink, Kaliber?  He included, "they take arl the alcohol oot!"  He's a Geordie.  Soon after they aired, he was done for drink-driving, at which the wags added, "and they give it arl te me!"

I do recall that.

I googled "Shane Warne smoking" and found a recent newspaper report (Jan 22) of pictures of him on a balcony, clearly enjoying a fag, displaying what the tabloid in question referred to as a "dad bod".
