Been inspired by something a character eats or drinks?
« on: 04 March, 2022, 11:33:19 pm »
Mick Belker in Hill Street Blues loved sardines. JD was getting in an order of sandwiches for the guys on a stakeout; Neal wanted ox tongue, Henry wanted brisket on a kaiser with horseradish, and Mick wanted Bermuda onion and sardine on pumpernickel, with anchovies. And a couple of pickles.

Somehow that really lit my candle, so I baked some rye bread and bought a bag of sweet onions, and rummaged through my cans of fish and jars of pickles. Rather marvellous.

And listening to old plays on BBC Sounds sees me inspired to drink (in jowly, moustached voice, ordering from the steward at the club) a large brandy and soda. No ice, obviously, as such things weren't done in gentlemens' clubs in those days. Again, rather marvellous.

Anyone else think "yeah, that's what I fancy" because of a a character you've watched/listened to/read?

Blue string pudding.

Spaghetti with food colouring.

Could've been worse.

"Herrings in" as eaten by the wireless operator, Jack French, in The Yangtse Incident. Not done it yet but on the list.

I've always assumed that to have been inspired by Oliver Postgate being silly about "Cordon Bleu". I have no factual basis for that, but it seems too weirdly on the nose to be nothing more than a coincidence.

Maybe, but I thought I'd rather try pasta than a ribbon.

All of the Haruki Murakami novels.
He clearly likes to cook, and I like reading it and fancy eating it.
Nakata can keep his eels though.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

I went to a colleague's wedding a few years ago. At the reception, there was a choice of two cocktails on arrival - his wife had chosen Bellinis, he had chosen White Russians. I don't know if he'd ever had a White Russian before, but he was a fan of The Big Lebowski so it seemed like a good idea.

Absolutely no one touched the White Russians, everyone went for the Bellinis.

Who ever thought putting milk in an alcoholic drink was a good idea?

Anyone who ever spent an evening imbibing Steve “Knobber” Nixon's Brandy Alexanders*.  Hic!

I was thinking more along the lines of Deuchars and a good malt whisky ;)

Lokschen Pudding is a Yiddish Thing.
It's not blue but it's cooked noodles, with sugar, fat and died fruit, which is baked.

Cheap carbs!

Suspect, like bread pudding, it might make suitable Audax fodder on the road...
