Anyone able to play/record from 78s?

She's found a 78 disc from 1938 in her attic and would like to know more about its quality and content, before deciding whether or not she should ship it to its owner in the USA.

Can't you just put it on a normal turntable and spin it faster with your finger? I grew up in the 80s, made my dad mental by using his stereo for my white-boy hip-hop antics. You'll break the bloody thing, he proclaimed. Correctly as it turned out.

Play it on whatever turntable you can find and record on your phone. Then playback speeded up.

My turntable will only play 45's & 33's.   You need someone who has a vintage turntable such as a Garrard or Thorens.

WIth the old gramophones that could play all the speeds you'd flip the needle over to use one specifically for 78s. I think they were thicker and stronger - ISTR that using the LP needle on 78s would destroy the needle, using the 78 needle on vinyl would destroy the vinyl - so it's not as easy as just modifying the playback speed.

A Lenco L75 (often branded Goldring GL75 in the UK) has preset speeds of 16²/₃; 33¹/₃; 45 and 78 RPM and is also infinitely adjustable for speeds between 15 to 18 RPM 30 to 86 RPM.
Great sound too apparently especially if put into a solid plinth.

I have one but unfortunately its in bits for restoration.

You can pick up a used and working one for around £120, they are fairly common. You could sell it without losing any money after you were done with it.

And yes you would need a dedicated 78 RPM needle. Easiest way is to have two headshells one for 78 and one for 33 then you can swap them.

You should also use a special needle for proper mono 33 RPM LPs pressed before stereo was a a thing. Later mono pressings were cut on a stereo blank cutter so you can use a stereo needle for those.

What you really want is analogue controls.
