Friction barend shifters 10 speed
« on: 17 January, 2024, 08:15:28 pm »
My 8 month old friction barend shifter has died on the azub tricon gr recumbent tricycle. I need to find a replacement shifter non indexed .I am not sure what is currently available. I bought the broken shifter from sjsc sold as dia comp brand but there is no dia comp branding on ethier the packaging or levers.and lm not sure that I want to replace with the same levers as these have failed so soon. Does anyone know what else is out there 🤔

I would have said look at Velo Orange's offer but a quick Google seems to show them stocking Dia Compe so you may be no better off.

Several 'old school' Campagnolo bar end shifters currently on E-Bay for £20 each.

Quite a few on ebay - both auction and a few buy-it-now at no money.

Russ Roca at Path Less Pedaled has been working on friction shifters for modern bikes : 8, 9, 10, 11 speeds

Shimano 8 and 9sp shifters do friction only, The older 10sp ones did too but now they don't so be aware. Microshift make a lot of index/friction switchable bar end shifters as well.

I think I have one or maybe two spare Shimano bar-ends. Probably 8-speed, possibly unused. Or maybe I just kept broken ones in case they proved cannibalisable later. PM and I'll check. It/they would be FTGH.

At only 8 months old, assuming you haven't killed them by crashing or something, I think my first port of call would be to ask for a refund (or a new shifter) from SJS.

I have considered this but warranty stuff can take a long time and I need the trike  :)

If you get the Microshift 9 speed bar ends shifter model  ending in T , they offer friction. Switched to them as Diacompe ones kept breaking after a while. The Microshift ones are still going.

You can do both though. Claim on warranty and in the meantime buy a new set of shifters. When SJS send you a replacement or refund, you've got spares or some cash.

Interesting that someone else has had a problem with di comp levers. Will order the new levers tomorrow  :)

These seem interesting:
https://www.microshift.com/models/bs-m10/

Had those on the Streetmachine after I upgraded the rear mech. They seemed to be every bit as reliable as the 9-speed Microshift levers I had on it previously (after killing several Dura-Ace cheese ones by doing outlandish things like train travel and leaning the bike against a wall).  Usual disclaimer about knowing whether you need MTB or road 10-speed applies.  (And the MTB bar-ends are necessarily slightly bigger than the road ones on account of the pull ratio.)

But if cycleman only wants friction, I'm sure there are much cheaper alternatives.  The number of speeds shouldn't matter.

Friction, yes but must be more reliable so I will pay more for that  :)

Microshift 10 speed shifters are now fitted. The  levers are shorter than the diacompe ones but are black and look nice on the tricons black bars they even seem to work as well

Levers that work is a distinct improvement over levers that don't work.
