Endeavour aka The Young Morse. Thoroughly enjoyable and good period pieces.

I enjoyed Taboo last week, will be watching 2nd episode tonight.
Hoh yessssss! [or rather we caught up with Shelock last night, but will catch-up with TabooEp2 soon ...]

I do hope they turn Tom Hardy*'s mike up in future episodes, he's too good to miss any dialogue :)
So, Ep2 was just as dark and brooding. They even hired another mumbler to share some scenes with Mr Hardy.

I feel it's starting to drag its heels just a little, but then it's not a series that is all about the action sequences, so I should probably re-learn some patience!

Hardy and Pryce are both magnificent.

(I'm irritated at always being a week behind with Sherlock - MUST NOT click on the Sherlock thread ... )

Tom Hardy has pretty much made Brooding & Menacing his own.  I haven't checked my dictionary but it may even say, "See: Tom Hardy" for those two entries.

This evening we started watching the new Netflix adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events. It's fab.

My son read the books when he was around 8-10 and loved them much more than the Harry Potters, which pleased me because I'm of the opinion that they are superb children's books, very well written and great stories. The Potter books are fine but not nearly as good - they're quite stale and old-fashioned, really, while the Lemony Snickets are much more witty and inventive.

And this new series captures the spirit of the books so much better than the Jim Carrey film of a few years ago. (I actually quite liked the film but it just missed out most of what makes the books so great.)

Highly recommended. Especially for kids.

Ah! Well, last evening as well, we started to watch the American version of House of Cards (episodes 1-3) on NetFlix. Very well done I thought, though (increasingly) trying to follow 'who's who' in a drama with increasing numbers of characters, is challenging for me. Quite a few more episodes to get through as well!!

Will have to have a look at the A.S.O.U. Events another time. The film was received well, wasn't it?
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

I've just finished binging the leftpondian House Of Cards.

Series 1 and 2 were excellent, I thought; 3 and 4 slightly less so.

It usually takes me about ten minutes into a watching session to get over Spacey's accent.

Hmm, my newspaper had the Books of wossisname but I see an electronic version doesn't.

Stand down.

Bloke last night's books were Robert Harris; Gerald's doing Dan Brown.  Next week's mag says "Asterix, the Periodic Table, the novels of Nick Hornby, Richard Feynman and Stan Laurel" so not next week either.

Ah, I'm probably mixing my authors. So many tenterhooks on, I was.

Gerald's not on thus week either because of some Eurovision wank >:(

I can't remember how well it was received generally but it got a mixed reception from fans of the books. Judged on its own merits, it was pretty good. Jim Carrey made a decent Count Olaf - a restrained performance by his standards, although the character allowed him some scope for doing his usual Jim Carrey thing. The kids were very good as well. The main problem was that it had to cram the content of the first three books into a single feature-length movie, so a lot of what was great about the books was simply discarded, which definitely irked the purists. And it ended up being much more of an outright comedy than the books. I liked it though. I thought it was funny.

I've only seen a few episodes of the TV series so far but it's clear that the more expansive format allows them to follow the meandering narrative style of the books more faithfully. My only concern is that it might end up feeling too expansive - the plot of each book is essentially the same, and the repetition and running jokes work really well in book form, but might start to wear a bit thin on screen.

It also strikes me that the magical realist style does slightly blunt some of the darker elements - Count Olaf is essentially reduced to a pantomime villain and perhaps not really menacing enough, certainly not as menacing as he comes across in the books. So when he hits Klaus across the face, it does seem slightly out of character. Which it shouldn't. But then I guess you have to be very careful when depicting violence towards children on screen. I do like the fact that they've got Doogie Howser to play the part though.

They should have got David Lynch to direct it. Although maybe then it wouldn't have been suitable for children...

More of the same this week. Plus some actual ... "Taboo" activity. Finally!

It's all kicking off nicely.

New series of Fortitude starts tonight. Yay!

Shame it won't have Stanley Tucci in it though. Or Michael Gambon.

Prolly available on iPlayer but, the other night was Cheetahs- Growing Up Fast.

Some here may know I have a soft spot for Cheetah. This was ace throughout and sad in places and I was damn jealous of the cameraman.

Did they show much of Tarzan?  ;)

BBC4 has a load of stuff on tonight, something about EMI and then something about prog rock. Just now I'm watching one hit wonders.

From the ten seconds I saw while channel-hopping, "sparse" is an excellent summary of the production too.

On Fox, but also available on Amazon Prime, Legion.

Another Marvel offering, but this time much better. Imagine the first episode of Heroes, remade with David Lynch directing and you are getting close. Hopefully the rest of the series is as good (the last bit was a little Deadpool, with the guy just waving his hand to chuck people about).
