And yet the utterly unbonkers TV's Nice C Boardman is into cave diving.

I expect he does since they are useful for attaching torches to, and for protecting the noggin from the kind of low-speed knocks you tend to get when umop-ap!sdn in a narrow pitch-dark hole full of ice-cold water.

Competitive high-speed telegraphy. No spectators allowed.

The BBC says it died out with the end of the cold war, but according to this wikipedia article it's still going strong. Belarus were the 2016 world champions.

Tractor pulling.  Chevy big block V8s or ex-Soviet helicopter turbines, and lots of them.

I'm sure that one makes sense in the American Mid-West, given sufficient beer and pizzas. Other than that, what exactly is going on? Maybe it needs fireworks.

The Danes are very keen on it.  It's basically drag racing but with more power, trading speed for torque.  As much power as a main line electric railway locomotive.

Unlimited Hydroplane racing is pretty bonkers.  Flimsy boat + T58 gas turbine out of a Huey helichopter = 200+ mph on water and an almost cast-iron certainty of the driver being killed utterly to DETH if it goes umop-ap!sdn.

I looked this up last time it came up: The 'sled' vehicle behind the tractor has a bulldozer style blade on the front, and a large mass that can move from front to back.  This is driven by the wheels, so as it moves along the track, the weight shifts forward, causing the blade to progressively dig further into the ground.  Therefore the distance the tractor pulls the sled down the track is an indication of how much pulling power it has.

No doubt at some point a bunch of hipsters from California will come along with a contraption based on a lead-acid submarine battery and the drivetrain from a several of crashed Teslas, win outright, and be hounded across state lines with pitchforks and pump-action shotguns for being homosexual commie vegetarians.

There's been a pedal-powered hydrofoil race video-clip all over Facebook this month, but I can't find it off-FB now :(

Not properly "bonkers", but a bit different and very impressive in its own way

Ar, saw that last week.  Something of a contrast with that farce with TV's Guy Martin a few years back.

Motorbike road racing (e.g North West 200 or the Isle of Man TT) is completely bonkers. Over 200mph between dry stone walls on roads complete with manhole covers and lampposts etc.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Dunno about that, I reckon road sidecar racing looks more bonkers or at least more scary for the copilot.

This is the most bonkers sport I've come across
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_solo_climbing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leCAy1v1fnI

I have done quite a lot of that, on routes up to 300 feet in length. The sane climbers tend to drop quite a few grades, though, when unroped…

That said, my hardest ever lead was Sundowner at Froggatt, E2 5a, and that is really a solo. No gear placements on the line.

I remember flicking the TV onto coverage of a sidecar racing round the TT course. The driver just got a bit too close to the right going round a corner with the second man hanging out. He caught himself on a set of garden railings and was unseated. The rider carried on, the second guy got up and walked off shaking his head.

Utterly bonkers

A few years ago the trainer on an IT course I was on was a ex F1 sidecar driver (had been on TV when they used to show it alongside the motorbike GPs - no money in sidecars though hence his new career). He told me that they used to have to use a different outfit for the TT as the ones designed for racetracks had too long a wheelbase and grounded on the hump back bridges on the TT course. And yes he was a nutter.
I don't think they allow F1 class sidecars at the TT any more, they are too fast and scary even for the TT barmpots.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Yep, the current TT sidecar outfits are 600cc F2 jobs, hence the frequent engine failures from having the nuts thrashed off them.
