Digitally the bits are meant to be displayed from the medics perspective not the patients.

I got a letter from the NHS this morning, offering me a free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening. It’s apparently offered to all men “in their 65th year”. My birthday is March 14th. My appointment is March 15th.

I didn't think that was considered particularly concerning. My brother was informed that he has one. (Actually, they told him he had an aneurysm, but not where. He only found out when I freaked and told him to get more information.)

Well worthwhile.

A burst abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has HUGE mortality.
A leaking AAA has high mortality.

Planned surgery to fix (before leak/burst) has low mortality.

A big AAA is an unexploded bomb under your belt.

SMALL AAAs can be watched.

Inlaw Paw had his fixed when he was in his early 80s & lived to be nearly 100.

I had my aorta done (screened) a year or two ago. All clear.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Nowadays they treat the majority with endo-vascular treatment which is virtually day surgery.  All done through a small incision in the groin.  Known as EVAR.  They have extremely fancy replacements now which can repair into the renal arteries or the vessels for the intestine.  All done using x-rays and very fancy unfurling technology.  Pleating and unfurling of minimally invasive implants is a major science.

Well worth getting screened. Some years ago a friend collapsed at our house with what we assumed was a heart attack. Fortunately for him, the medics not only arrived at speed, they realised straight away what it was.  He "died" several times on the way to hospital, but survived and made an almost complete recovery.
I then bullied my husband into getting screened and his GP was delighted someone had actually come forward. (husband OK)

ISTR my brother's was measured as 5cm.

Risky but not critical.

He deflected, saying he'd read that these are often caused by people do do a lot of intensive exercise all their life.  That's another deflection, he does about 3 hours of kung fu a week.

I’ve got a really sore calf. Like after bad cramp, but without the sudden cramp. Maybe it’s still cramped. I’ve done a bit of town based walking around the last couple of days, but I can’t identify what might have caused it.

I’ve got a really sore calf.
Get it checked for DVT?  Especially if there is any swelling.
Not too likely as you have been active.
A&E doctor used a tape measure to check the size of each of my calves when I had a suspected DVT.
It wasn't a DVT, but that's a Long Story.

Thanks. Mrs Dan checked me for swellings and bruises, though not with a tape measure. It’s no more painful when prodded either. A bit better today, but I’m still taking stairs with a wince.

When a blood test showed it was unlikely to be a DVT , the A&E doctor was mystified and insisted it got scanned anyway even though the radiologists were decidedly sniffy about doing it.
It was a large cyst in the top of my calf muscle that had burst. No idea what caused that.

Baker's cysts are usually an out-pouching from the knee joint, I think… https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bakers-cyst/

My mum had one of those in 2008, it was bloody painful, she could barely walk and we had to haul her across London and then back again when she had to go home early cos knee (and sister in prison again).

Radiologists insisted it wasn't a Baker's cyst. But yes very painful.
I collapsed on the floor, husband shovelled me into the car and needed a wheelchair to get me into Urgent Care.
Triage made sure I jumped the queue and a lovely GP took over.
I was sitting on a chair and had to ask to lie down before I fell off...
Got pumped with anti-coagulants before they had any results from blood test.
But no lasting ill effects, and very happy it wasn't a DVT.

GP surgery rang me this evening inviting me for repeat smear.
I told receptionist I thought I'd had a letter after my last, stating I was too old for any more.
Decided to go for it anyway.
Get offered an appointment for tomorrow.
Look at computer Calendar.
'Ooooh sorry, I've got Covid, I'm not supposed to go out!'
Silly me!
I've now booked another date.
Looked up routine screening: every 3 years up to 50.
Every 5 years age 50-64.
Stop after 65.
Which explains why I received letter with result just after I was 60, stating they'd stop.
I'll still go unless they cancel.

So I went, with D pushing my chair and booking me in via touchscreen.
HCP looks at her computer screen.
"Your last smear was September 2018. We only do smears every 5 years in over 50s. If we do another, they'll just throw it away so best not.."
Told her I thought last smear was my last as I'd had a letter to that effect.

She then counted on her fingers to confirm that I'd be over 65, five years after my previous smear.

What a FARCE!

At least D has not been too dischuffed!

Good thing surgery is only 100 yards away!

A week last Thursday I caught my thumb in the belt loop of my trousers. I hyper-extended and twisted it. At first I was not worried. Last weekend I could not do anything with my right-hand. And the bottom of my thumb was engorged with blood. I was worried that a bone might be broken. So on Monday I walked to Cardiff Heath Hospital discovered people with minor injuries needed to phone for an appointment. I walk home and pick up the phone after half an hour I put it down again. The next hour I try for another half hour. And again. The fourth attempt was answered almost immediately. So at 6pm I was in the waiting room. Shortly after 9pm I see a nice doctor, get an x-ray and an appointment with a hand specialist on Wednesday.

On Wednesday I go to Llandough hospital and half an hour after see the doctor. He checks my hand  moves my thumb around in circles and concludes I have no ligament damage. By now the blood swelling had gone. I had substantially healed. I can use my hand again.  He said I have a little arthritis at the base of my thumb, nothing to worry about yet. He offers to have a nurse dress my hand with splint. I ask if I do not have my hand wrapped "could I do more damage." He said no.  So I am discharged.

Today I can do ordinary things like pick up the kettle to make tea which I could not do last week. (My left hand could last week).  Last week I used pasta and rice, peeling vegetables would have been very painful.  Although my thumb is not perfect I am happy again.

Our doc, and the pharmacy between them (mostly the doc, I think) has buggered up my Dear Wife's inhaler prescription. Normal pharmacy hasn't got a spare to lend her, and sh has only 2 puffs left. She has dialled 111, but they don't seem to be able to find any record of our doctor's surgery on their records.

This is all shit.

Hope you manage to find some replacement inhalers without having to go to walkin clinic.
