Live on Pick TV it seems: http://www.radiotimes.com/episode/dndfx6/sir-bradley-wiggins-the-hour---live---sir-bradley-wiggins
-
PICK also appears to be on Freesat.
Lose the beard, Brad - the drag could make all the difference.
-
He's going to smash it. Beard or no beard.
-
It's what used to be Sky 3. Can be found on Freesat and freeview :)
-
That's a Sky channel, though, isn't it? I should imagine it'll be available on the YouTube UCIchannel (https://www.youtube.com/user/ucichannel)
I don't know about the UCI Channel, but the Sky Channel on YouTube and the Sky website itself are providing live coverage.

How long's it on for :P
(Pick were showing a Bradley Wiggins documentary - "A year in yellow" - the other day. I saw it listed and wondered why. This scheduling explains it.)
I am strangely hyped for Wiggo's attempt. Normally I don't mind, but there is something about his attempt that's caught my imagination.
-
Hoping I can pick up enough signal despite being onnatrain to watch the YouTube stream!
-
D. Telegraph has a podcast with Wiggins/Dowsett/Boardman/Obree. Wiggins v.up for doing this record - wants to finish 'completely spent'.

Can't see that in UK...
-
Interesting that the attempt is timed to start at 6:30pm, when all the other recent ones have started on the hour. Clearly thinking about the TV scheduling implications there.
Air pressure now looks likely to be way more than 1030hPa, which is 750-1000m of handicap over a low-pressure day.
Cant he just race in a vacuum* chamber? Or have we found the limits of M**doch's pockets?!?
*partial, obvs ...

Wow. I know air pressure makes a difference, but I had not appreciated it could be that significant. Incredible.
-
Say the air pressure is 1035 mbar for his attempt. A low pressure system over the UK could easily be 50 mbar lower than that, i.e. a 5% difference. Power lost to drag is linear with air pressure, so if this were a flat TT where virtually all power goes into overcoming drag, we'd expect to see a 5% difference, which at 50 kph means going 2.5 km slower. For an hour record in a velodrome, power lost will mostly be split between overcoming air resistance and accelerating himself round the corners - I don't know the split, but if it's a portion of a 2.5 km pie, 1 km sounds eminently feasible.
-
Surely with the airlock doors at the Olympic velodrome they can just get a good vacuum pump in there.
-
I am told that there is a network of tunnels under Norwich which might be partially evacuated for record attempts though as they're only about 3' in diameter they'd only be of use to the Dark Side siblinghood.

Where do I "tune in" for the best commentary[1]? I've found Pick TV on the idiot box and the Telegraph has a commentary.
[1] Surely everyone grew up watching test matches on the TV but listening to the commentary on the wireless. Everyone apart from my wife - who thought it bizarre.
-
PICK also appears to be on Freesat.

The speed beard is no more...
-
UCI on Youtube seems good.
-
UCI Youtube isn't working in East London
"The uploader has not made this video available in your country. Sorry about that."
Thanks UCI.
(I do have it on Pick, but was hoping UCI had some timings.)
-
Listening to the Telegraph, I at least heard the start! The TV was on an ad break when Wiggo got an early start.
-
Help please.
I'm putting ICU into YouTube and not finding anything I'd expect.
-
No average speed so time for the spreadsheet to quickly calculate the average speed.
-
UCI feed is working in this bit of East London, but I'm running 'YouTube Unblocker' on FF.
I'm kinda surprised at his gearing: 58-18; I had expected something a bit higher.

That's a shame if it doesn't work, it's a great picture on a 27" iMac.

Depending on your ethics, this link may be of use - http://www.steephill.tv/classics/cycling-hour-record/#live

He's starting to wander a bit.
-
This is fast. Too fast? Hopefully it won't be like Bobridge's attempt.
-
Amazed that weather and air pressure makes a difference. They're saying it can change the result by something in the region of 500 metres.
-
OK. I've managed to get the pub TV tuned to pick. I'm not allowed volume though. So I'm relying on you guys for commentary.
-
Amazing stillness, concentration and consistency. Despite the high pressure, I think he's got this. 54.8 would be my guess.

Well, it's a very small peloton and no one's made a break or an attack yet.
-
He's velcro'd to the saddle........no farting.

Lucky devil. The commentator's a right wanker.

Every one in the pub is giving me wtf? looks. Don't care.

How much further would he have gone had he stuck to that black line?

To save me searching. What's the target?
-
60 mins.
No more.
No less.
-
::-)
-
Dowsett did 211 laps
-
54.526 :D

Well done Bradley!
-
A nice Palmaris, but PBP, Essex SR and BCM missing, perhaps we will see him put this oversight to bed in the future!
-
Only caught the last 30 mins on Eurosport, he looked to be on the limit in the last 10 mins. Well done Brad, 55 would have been nice but 54.5 will keep the others thinking for a while, especially with the obvious pain to do it.
A very interesting special "Les Rois de la Pédale" just after the record with Roger Legeay as a guest, discussing who might go after Brad, talking about his career and in passing wondering why Chris Froome doesn't have the same charisma. Legeay brought up the old potatoe of the machines not being the same for Merckx and Brad, thus putting the record out of reach of the non-specialist trackies and clm riders. Funny but no-one makes the same arguement with Lucien Petit-Breton (who also raced track and road). I can already hear the cries "Record deleted; no doping controls, machine not UCI approved! Come back next year please!". A nice touch was the footage of Peter Kennaugh winning today's stage of the Criterium, along with the talk about UK cycling - no mention of Cav in the charisma stakes though, although he probably gets more regular airtime than any other Brit rider on the continent.
-

Do you think he could win PBP against the Audax specialists?

Win?
Thought it was audax and not a race.

Yes, no doubt. Any of the pros would be faster. Jock Boyer won RAAM the same year as leading out Davis Phinney for Giro de Italia bunch sprints.
-
Is this an old man's record?
Partly because of the mental stuff needed for it and partly because the preparation and recovery would eat into a money-earning Pro's schedule.
-
Indurain was 30 when he took the record in 1994, and won the Tour de France for the fifth time the following year.
-
So who is the youngest to hold the record?
-
Talking of old men ...
Who was the rather tanned VIP hugging Brad after Big Mig?
(the wholy hopeless Sky commentators were totally silent at this point
If this was intended as a teaser to sell Sky Sports, it did nothing for me.)

Alex Dowsett is 26 so it doesn't have to be an old mans record. It seems to be something typically done to crown a career but he found a way of fitting it into his pro schedule with no ill effects (well none we know of but he hasn't raced much this year since).
-
Perhaps, rather like Grand Tour winners, the body needs to have gained a little resilience and development and that is why the record is attempted by those the other side of 25yrs.
