Looks nice, but not cheap (£500+), and no viewfinder which is something I miss with my LX5.

But the pension won't stretch to it :'(

This is not making my quest for a pocket point and shoot any easier...I just want something to put in my handbag for when I'm out not taking photos, but happen to see something.  If I'm going out taking photos, I take the SLR.  The Sony looks pretty good, really, but...it's a Sony, and their software is AWFUL.  ALWAYS.

Looks hard to beat on quality, but maybe the Canon G12 or S100 is better on price....

@squidders: I bought an s95 thinking I'd use it when I didn't have my 'proper' camera with me, but use my iPhone 90% of the time. They're so good in decent light, there's no need to carry something else.

Crikey, I almost never use the iPhone. The quality is so poor. But my last phone was a Sony and basically a cyber shot with a phone attached. The iPhone is awful by comparison. I only use it if I want to tweet something immediately.  That's why I'm interested in the Sony.

Yep, just been announced but...that means the S100 and G12 will be a lot cheaper ;)

Not only does it look like an excellent camera, it's also named after a Shimano groupset.  I want.

RX100 does look like a great camera.  ~2.5x the area of the LX3 sensor, decent zoom range (could live without 24mm - perhaps), apparently very good low light capability.  Shame about no EVF facility; though I'm not a fan of the plug-ons .

DigitalRev liked it but weren't overly impressed. Basically why spend all that money on a fixed lens camera?

I might as well say it. How many classic photos were taken with a fixed lens camera.
