I had a film crew round at the SEEKRIT BUNKER tonight, interviewing me for  documentary they're making about the race.

I taught one of them to ride - poor guy was trembling afterwards  ;D

Good Luck to all. Charlotte - will your steed be sporting full touring kit?

I've just read the programme (!) and it tickles me greatly that the morning, in addition to warm-up and course familiarisation, will be given over to fitting transponders to the pennies.

The programme is:

Quote
9.30 - 12.00

Riders Registration, scrutineering, race numbers, team T shirts, fitting of race transponders, riders warm up session on the course and briefing session
11.00 - 1.45

   Mereside Brass Band performance
12.45
   Hobby Horse World Championship Sprint
1.00
   Boneshaker World Championship Dash
1.30
Riders Assemble for a Group Photograph
2.00
Start of the Knutsford Great Race
5.00
Finish of the Knutsford Great Race
5.15
   The Prizegiving Ceremony

Transponders will be essential, as there are 50 teams, the circuit is only one kilometre and the race is three hours long. Even an average pace of 20kph would produce 3,000 passes. Which is a lot to keep track of. There is also the problem that a team can have up to 4 riders. Hopefully there will be some form of commentary to keep the spectators informed.
I'm doing the Northern Dales 200 on Sunday, so I'll look forward to seeing a report.

Oh absolutely.  I'd hate to marshal it with manual counting - you'd need a team of tickers and that's hard enough in tri pool swims.  Marshal under-counting and rider over-counting are nightmares even before you get to perfidious behaviour.

Im riding this - with a team from the Forest Town (Mansfield) Track League - so thats Richard from Matlock , Rob from Beauvale and another ordinary owner who i dont know

We've got 2 bikes to use - i can just about ride the bigger of the 2. As 2 of the others in the team are about a foot taller than me, i think the smaller machine maybe safer for me

I'll be in a Derby Merc (blue and white) top at some point, Richard in either Matlock (orange) or Forest Town (black and Team Sky style blue)

give us a cheer
i think im going to be in pain by sun pm  ;D

Adding to the yACF contingent, I'll be joining a group of Chorlton Wanderers at Tatton tomorrow.
I'm riding out separately from Stockport after playing 5-a-side. I may be a little tired.

OT- It was shaping up to be a fantastic weekend because I thought the Trans Lancs Rally was on in Heaton Park today. Old trucks and buses, 5-a-side, bonkers bike racing and riding to/from them all. It doens't get much better than that.
It turns out the the TL Rally is tomorrow  :( .

I must read things more carefully 'cos I'd have set off to Heaton Park if Helen hadn't spotted my mistake  :-[

Hmmm I've lots of pictures.
Lots and lots and lots of pictures.

The fastest riders were the most difficult to photograph, naturally.
Ergo Charlotte was difficult to photograph. She was up there with the most determined riders.

Now to upload all these goddam pictures. I can't promise to get many processed tonight.. I need an early one as I'm going to the airport at stupid o clock tonight.

Bob's fault I've got all these pictures. I wasn't even going to take a camera until I read his post this morning.

Jim Brailsford won the race after Josef Zimovcak from Brno in the Czech Republic was disqualified for reckless riding. Josef was not able to be called in and completed more laps than Jim.
That explains the a robust discussion I saw between Josef and a marshall, in different languages, neither apparently understanding the other, before Josef remounted and carried on.

It was also good to see the team of 4 young lads on their 27" penny mixing it with the full size machines.

As I understand it, after the Individual Winner was announced (107 laps), then Charlotte and Kat were presented with the Ladies' Prize.  They'd done 105 laps.  The organisers presumably felt that the Team Prize should go to the next best, who had done around 94 laps.  Hence the Stewards' Enquiry.

I guess that the prize giving presupposes that the Ladies' Prize will be a sort of consolation for the poor weak girlies who would otherwise not be in with a chance at the silverware.   ;D  :o

The best moment of the day for me was when I overheard some teenagers who obviously spent their time trying to be as cool as possible, saying how it was the weirdest thing they'd been to and one of the best, while they were watching a trad jazz quartet doing a version of 'sunshine of your love' with the pennies whizzing past in the background, past the Bentleys on display.

That was a fantastic day out !
Helen and I arrived about 45 minutes after the race started (football went on a bit longer than anticipated and I needed to stop en route to get something, anything, to eat).
We watched the race with some of our cycling mates for about an hour before they set off back and we decided to go for a walk around the course.
Just as we set off walking, there was an almighty crash and 2 riders went down. The organisation was either really good or they'd gone over directly in front of a medical crew. After a few minutes, both riders remounted and continued on their merry way  .

Near the pit area Phil saw my yACF top and came over to say hello and, from there, we saw Clarion, Butterfly and the forummer formerly known as Superstoker (apologies for not remembering the new name  :-[ ). We met the latter three at Monument at the start of DD last year. It was good to see them again and to meet Phil.
Sadly we then had to get a move on to catch up with our departed colleagues. We met them in the Railway at Mobberley where we joined them in a drink and got talking to some potential new recruits for Chorlton Wanderers.

Edit: Abiding memory of the day:- Charlotte's 1000 yard 200km stare when she was pounding around the track. It even surpasses the goal that I scored when I got the ball deep in defence, dropped my shoulder and..........................

Charlotte and Kat went unto Knutsford.  Being un-pennied and therefore skill-less, I assumed the Choppy Warburton role (minus the strychnine and brandy, natch) and worked the pit.  The course: a 700m tight circuit.  The race: 3 hours, most laps wins.

Kat had previous penny-racing experience in Evandale (Tasmania) so she took the first leg.  They both rode hell for leather and WON THE TEAM RACE with an official 105 laps.

(it gets complicated around the lap counting: I was counting each lap, so as to call the changeovers before they flagged, so I had notes for 103 laps.  Two free processional laps before the starting gun gives 105. The laps initially announced were well down at 94, so there was some querying...)

That's 72 km!

Did I say starting gun?  Starting Napoleonic freaking cannon.  We felt the shockwave over in the pit lane.

The big boojum on the course was The Czech, Josef, who has Grand Tour palmares and (in legend) faceplanted to get over the line for a win.  A nails nutter who took corners so steep we were all gawping.  Once their blood was up, the ladies were cornering like the Czech -- and unlike the Czech, not riding dangerously and not causing DQ-earning dangerous crashes.  Later in the race, he was taking Charlotte's wheel for a few laps.  There was a respectful nod after it all was over.  There are some awesome photos of Calshot-steep turns at speed.

The buzz in the pit was fantastic: the other teams coming through and swapping bikes or transponders, knackered racers, frantic repairs (the Joffs were being ridden to spokey death; the old bikes just falling apart).  You'd catch urgent imprecations in random languages and accents, the whole thing had a vintage car race.  No pie fight at the end.

There were a team of young'uns on a 27" repro and they had it nailed.  The charity guys from Spend A Penny were great, and it was neck-and-neck between our girls and the spiffing moustaches right to the end.  We redlined Charlotte for the century lap, swapped over to Kat until the finishing gun, and the two rode a valedictorian lap side-by-side high-fiving through the finish to tumultuous applause.

The solos, the processional teams -- all awesome.  Dave Brailsford won the solo, with maybe half a dozen serious solo GC contenders (including the DQ'd Czech). In the last hour we'd see these speedy boys being paced and then being taken by Charlotte and Kat; with a pit-lane time of 15 seconds, we could change often, keeping them sprinty-fresh.

The marshalling, course -- awesome.  There's the steward's enquiry to look at yet but we know who won.  :)

Queensbury Rules: We're all friends (penny racing is a small, weird pond), but by crikey, they were in it to win it.  A-game all the way, perfect bikes for the course (the big wheels couldn't accelerate out of the corners), solid experience (London on a penny = coping with race traffic and the pit), exactly the right dose of red mist and a solid strategy.

Chapeau, Knutsford Great Race 2010 team champs!

A marvellous day - the epitome of steampunk cycling. Indeed, Charlotte in her prime did resemble a steam train.  Kat, too, belied her slight appearance with some fearsome riding and impressive acceleration on some of her overtakes. I have oodles^2 of photos (many just blurs) of our wonderful team and others.

Highlights included:

The young lads who did the whole race on a 27" bike, pedalling furiously (though they did get the hang of getting the feet off the pedals for the short sharp downhill). They were totally focussed for the entire three hours, and I didn't see any adult assistance. Even when tiring, their changeovers were very impressive.

Joff riding solo, with a pith helmet on. Chapeau!

Dennis The Menace egging the crowds on.

The indomitable Lionel, who now has a fan club in Cheshire, it seems, from the roars of applause and general delight as he made his stately but good-humoured, and ever-so-slightly eccentric way around the course.

Spendapenny, the second placed team, with their magnificent costumes and serious face furniture. Despite having never ridden a penny before entering the race, they were brilliant.

Best of all - Charlotte & Kat's utter delight after the race. They seemed almost more excited about the prospect of cake than the win itself, but by jove, they had earned both!

Special mention to Mr Gates, whose sterling pitwork kept the team moving smoothly.  His transponder fitting at changeover reminded me of an F1 pitstop.  And his careful record of lap times was the key to a challenge to the electronic output.

I should point out that the cake in question was the remains of Marj's fruit cake from Mildenhall.  Still moist & lovely, and restorative for exhausted Ordinary Heroines.

Executive summary:  We won.

Longer version:  I'm going to have to wait until tonight to start uploading the photos and putting some words together because work is still getting in the way of teh internets.  In my lunch hour, I'm looking at Flickr and wondering if that lunatic going round corners at such astounding angles was really me.

I can't quite believe that we did what we did.  It was an amazing day, made all the more special by the fabulous and marvellous people who we were able to share it with.

It wasn't just Kat and I that won it.  Kat is the most awesome penny rider but both of us needed the skill and flair of our soigneur and photographer, Phil and our directeur sportif, Mr Andy Gates.  Both of them worked their socks off to make sure that we had the best possible chance of riding as hard as we could.  We didn't let them down.

The support from the crowd was magical.  Our cheerleaders were undoubtedly Clarion, Butterfly and TGL (who has an astouding pair of lungs on him for one so young).  Thank you to everyone who cheered us on.  It didn't half help.

As far as I know, the stewards' inquiry is still playing out.  After everyone had gone home and they were packing up the marquee, the guy from Xtra Mile Events who ran the timing system confirmed to me that he'd been back through the data and that we'd definitely won.  He was so embarrassed about fluffing it that he actually bent over and invited me to kick his arse.  You'll be relieved to hear that I conducted myself with dignity and declined...

I shook the hand of the race organiser who apologized, congratulated us and said that the committee was meeting tomorrow night and he'd be in touch.

When this is all sorted out, Kat and I totally want to go up to Knutsford and claim our trophy.

You must!

EDIT: Was the timing done by Artie Fufkin?

Artie Fufkin: [after nobody turns up, at an album-signing promotion] You know what I want you to do? Will you do something for me?
David St. Hubbins: What?
Artie Fufkin: Do me a favor. Just kick my ass, okay? Kick this ass for a man, that's all. Kick my ass. Enjoy. Come on. I'm not asking, I'm telling with this. Kick my ass.

Indeed.  I wasn't there.  I have an alibi.  You can't prove a thing.  Etc.

Though I expect we'd make a respectable team at something involving MAD SCIENCE, trips to A&E, or corrupting innocent people with bikes, perhaps, I'm never going to be that good at actually riding them... Chapeau!

I'd say he held his line and the other guy squeezed him, the problem was the looming kerb on the right hand side.

Blatant undertaking, expressly disallowed, and even if he'd had no alternative he should have yelled to warn them.  Clear dangerous riding.  The other guy didn't squeeze him, he had him up his arse before he knew it.
Title: Re: The Knutsford Great Race. (Ordinaries)
Post by: Exit Stage Left on 06 September, 2010, 06:18:44 pm
There's no doubt Josef should have shouted a warning, but he's passing on the right as the rules stated and would have avoided the other guy if he hadn't suddenly caught sight of the nasty kerb. The other rider brought down maintains a steadier line through that bend.

Likewise, it did appear that the two riders outside drifted towards the apex.  Harsh, unless he has history.

I interviewed a German rider at the start who described Josef as a bit crazy, and he'd be steering clear of him. The ability range was very wide, some riders were taking it very seriously, others less so.

Oh buggah!  My scalc won't open the .xls file :(

EDIT:  False alarm - Windows was just sulking that I wasn't using a Microsoft product.  Open Office had opened the spreadsheet quite happily.

Oh.  My.  Goodness! :o

That is magnificent.  104 laps in the end - initially ten not counted, which is a suspiciously round number.

Anyway, it looks from that like Mr Gates was keeping very accurate times.  Top man.

Jim Brailsford rode a ggod race, though.  Really outstanding.  It's a real shame that the Czech chap was DQ'd (not that I disagree with the reasoning), because he was a phenomenal rider.

I'm pleased Merlin Evans put up a good show for the Clarion.  I believe he's had two second places in the last two races, but he's not been riding much lately.  Creditable peformance.

And Lionel wasn't last!

Btw, anyone remember which team the young lads were?

Well done Charlotte and Kat. Hell, well done to Kim too, might as well say that as everyone else seems to be. :D
Mustn't forget Andy and Phil too. Looks like it was a good event with a good atmosphere from what I saw on the crash film.
Seems like you learned as you went along a bit. I can see why you'd need to be good on the corners, those big wheels would need a hell of a lot of winding up to speed and it'd kill the legs doing that. You probably lost a few laps when you were learning, so it's a very good effort compared to the mor experienced.

I did try to dress for the occasion  8)

the only shame is that we got to wait 10years for it to happen again. Although next time we may have machinary newer than 132years and approx 100 years old. We broke 7 spokes in total  ;D ;D ;D. and lost the transponder which cost us 10laps. Our newer macvhine shed its tyre - giving the owner a faceplant - nice. The wheel wa pringled - but Richard T stood on one side and me on the other - and it popped back into shape. Half a roll of duck tape later - the tyre was rolling off the rim which was a bit scary - and we werre back to sub 2 minute laps. Dont know if my wife knew whether to laugh or cry

So what's it actually like riding one of these things? Do you feel like you are constantly on the verge of a faceplant? What are they like to corner on?

I don't know about racing an original 1880s machine, but I can tell you that a Summerfield MkV is a thing of sublime beauty to race.  Having ridden Kat's (also repro) machine, I'm sure she feels the same way about her bike.

I had a sound advantage from the word go, I think.  My penny was probably one of the lightest machines on the grid and it had a slightly smaller wheel than most (49" as opposed to a more usual 52" or so).  This meant that it was more responsive to pedal power, whether into a corner when I wanted to scrub off speed, or out of one when I wanted to get on the beans.

Also, the original machines were racing on vintage-spec rubber.  More modern bikes like Kat's and mine are equipped with hooked Velocity rims which means we can run cut-up Greentyres; which although abysmal on a 700c wheel, are surprisingly responsive on a penny.

Of course, none of this takes that much away from the feeling of ohmygodsImgoingtostackitagghhhh! that you regularly encounter when you're racing a high bike.  The C of G isn't anywhere near a regular safety bicycle and you're always acutely aware of the way in which the slightest impedance to that big wheel is going to result in your centre of mass deciding that it's had enough of lagging behind and wants to get up front where all the action is.

When were were doing our warm up and course familiarization laps, I was astounded by the angles of dangle that the Czech was managing round those tight triangular corners.  But after ten or twenty race-pace laps, I was getting the bike over like I'd never imagined I would and it all started coming together rather well.  Like any other kind of crit racing, it's all in the corners and you've just got to find the edge of the tyres' grip and be sure you're riding within their envelope of safety.  You've got to keep on getting round people and you've got to stay aggressive all the time or you're not going to be competitive.

Penny racing is a total, total rush.  I'm not going to wait another ten years to do it again.

I did some research on Josef Zimovcak. Who was disqualified from the race.
Google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=1T4HPEA_en-GBGB229&hl=en&source=hp&q=Josef+Zimovcak&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=)

This was from 2007, about him completing the course of the Vuelta, 24 hours ahead of the race.

Quote
Josef Zimovcak - a 50 year old Czech postman - is crazy about cycling. He has taken part in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia but not on an expensive bike with gears. Josef Zimovcak rides an old-fashioned penny-farthing, where one wheel is much bigger than the other and keeping balance is an art. During the Tour de France two years ago Zimovcak almost had to quit after a bad fall on a mountain stage left him with a broken rib and jaw, but got back in the saddle, riding most days until around midnight and rising at six every morning. He says that when things got rough he thought about how he would buy an ice-cream when he finally got to Paris. The Giro d'Italia he gave up a few kilometres before the finishing line after a tragic accident when a motorbike collided with his accompanying vehicle. Zimovcak said that under the circumstances he could not finish the race and was later awarded a prize by the Czech Fair Play Sports Association. Now he wants to tackle the third European "Grand Tour" the Spanish Vuelta - a gruelling 3,240 km race through the Pyrenean Mountains. Like in the other races Zimovcak will be riding 24 hours head of the other contestants. He'll be starting on September 1st and if all goes according to plan he should cross the finishing line in Madrid on September 25th

Zimovcak is one hell of a rider.  In the last half hour, I had him on my wheel for about four laps.  I knew that they were my last laps because Andy had told me he was pulling me into the pits to let Kat sprint out the finish, so I was giving it everything I had.

By the time I was on my last lap, I was horribly anaerobic and gasping for breath.  Zimovcak was just sitting there on my wheel, getting a draft and looking like he was taking a break (which I suppose he probably was).

In any other race, his overtaking would just have been called "spirited".  In a penny race, it was definitely dangerous and I'm not surprised he got DQ'd.  I'd love to know how many laps he got, though.  I'd  guess at least five more than the winner.

Josef actually looked mightily pissed off that you'd passed him, and he didn't have anything left to overtake with.

A hell of a rider, but very aggressive.  Although I wasn't close to the crash, I saw some manoeuvres which were rather marginal.

His lap times are at the bottom of the results, it's also clear from the results that one rider in your team was lapping with the leaders, and the other about 10 seconds more per lap, the US riders were hampered by mechanical problems, spoke breakages, as they had picked up their machines in the UK prior to the event, so no shakedown time. Jim Brailsford rode an 54 inch 1887 New Rapid, and Josef rode a 1997 54 inch bike, unbranded. I've put a video with interviews up.

Can I ask of the afficionados - what determines the crank length on an ordinary?  The cranks look very short, and one imagines longer ones might help.  I appreciate that knee space is at a premium, but it looks as though Charlotte might have about 4 or 5" clearance above her knee to the handlebar.

erm, dunno why you think longer would help.

An Ordinary's gear is very low - so you have to be able to spin - shorter cranks make spinning easier, just like on a fixed Safety cycle.

Also, long cranks would reduce the size of wheel you could manage.

I've been dissecting the race to pin down its winningness.

First and foremost, obviously, is two strong riders with fixie traffic skills.

Next is two bikes.  This meant that when mechanical problems occurred (a drop on Kat's and five spokes on Charlotte's) they were fixed during that bike's downtime.

Then it's light, nippy bikes that were (by happy coincidence) suited to the course.

Then it's the ninja pit crew.  :smug:  I'm not just blowing my trumpet there, as Phil's errand-running for water and magic juice and such outside the pit lane was just as important.  We make enthusiastic Igors.

And of course there's good luck: nobody crashed out directly in front of them, and nobody got body-czeched into a barrier.  You make a lot of your own luck but the fuckup fairy was definitely visiting someone else that day.

I haven't yet sussed the relative importance of the race strategy.  The other teams were riding longer and a bit more measured - I think I heard half-hour spells - with less elegant changes.  Both riders recovered well, with their final set splits barely different from their initial sets, though each definitely needed resting (Kat was self-managing before she flagged; Charlotte requested management so she could surrender to the red mist).  I think that a half-hour rigid strategy would have seen Kat slow down to a fast cruise, and Charlotte start to make fatigue errors.  They made smart calls before we started, and we stayed adaptable to exploit the situation.

If I could suggest a penny race as part of the warmup to the York city centre crits (http://www.cliftoncc.org/competition/cycling_city_races) next year, who would I tell the organisers to contact?
Title: Re: The Knutsford Great Race. (Ordinaries)
Post by: clarion on 09 September, 2010, 08:12:37 am
I think that's basically the key to it, Andy.  I think the luck thing was related to the traffic-jamming fixie skillz.  Both riders were looking waaay ahead and anticipating well, planning the moves.  Most of the other teams were concentrating on getting round the course.

Aye, developing those skills, riding tested wheels (tied and soldered for the hard-racing win), practicing the tx and discovering the iffy transponder clips = making your own luck.

Wow!!!!!

what a day out.

Firstly, thanks to whoever first posted something on YACF about the great race something like a year and a half ago (probably charlotte), I jumped in feet first and got a team entry inthe same day...........then tried to figure out where to get a penny from and who to talk into learning to ride it!

Boy am I glad I did, that has to be the best, best, best race I have ever taken part in. Top quality organisation, great atmosphere, huge support and best of all a great bunch of riders who really entered the spirit of the event. Unforgettable. Thanks all.
Despite the fact that we killed both of our bikes, lost our transponder, popped a tyre off and dumped a rider over the bars, we finished smiling.

Do we really have to wait 10 years for some more of that?

PS. well done Charlotte and Kat, top riding. Chapeau

Richard

Let's not forget the original recipients of the trophy; Team Spend a Penny, who collected over £3,600 for Shelterbox.

Yep they were indeed very worthy runners up, congrats to them too. :)

They won the Men's team prize, the individual winner didn't feel he deserved his victory over the disqualified rider who did the greatest distance, as at 5 mins in this video.
