What's in your bedside table?
« on: 30 July, 2021, 09:56:57 pm »

What do you all keep in your bedside table?

I've not had one with any storage space for well over a decade. I'm building new bedroom furniture.  And while I know I want a surface next to the bed to put a drink, book, phone light etc...

But I'm wondering what I should design the space underneath to be useful for.

Mine's a set of drawers, mostly containing underwear and medication.  Allocated on the basis of drawers the right sort of size rather than convenience of access (our bedroom is about 85% full of bed).  Fondleslab, book, inhalers, hairbrush etc live on top.  There used to be a lamp, but it b0rked and I can control the room lights from the fondleslab, so it didn't get replaced.

Mine was from a 2nd hand charity shop when we were as poor as church mice, never got round to replacing it. It's one of the old style with a cupboard at the bottom, an open area in the middle and a shallow drawer at the top, tho my drawer is missing.
Kindle, stack of birthday cards, night time phone and spectacle storage, general collection of crap. Not sure what's in the cupboard but I don't open it often so it must be ripe for a purge...
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Mine – left behind by Miss von Brandenburg – has drawers.  Dunno what's in them except for a watch I haven’t worn in years and a small velvet-lined box intricately wrought by the Natives of the East* with a pair of silver cuff links in which I also ent worn in years.

On top of it is a yellow rubbery alarm clock from the Happy Swedish Halls Of Joy and a copy of “Climax In Coventry**” by Walter Hassan.

Mine is a Traesko self-assembly gubbins with two drawers, an open-fronted space and a large flat surface.  It is also quite tall for a bedside cabinet but then I have a tall bed so it works just fine.

All manner of odds and ends live in the drawers including two Frost Mora knives and a pair of table tennis bats.  My large fondleslab lives on top and there is a nest of miscellaneous usb cables for use with the Anker powerbank and charging of various toys.  Also, a Black Diamond battery powered dimmable camping lantern which is to hand for those extremely rare emergency moments.   Being a bear of very little sight I don't often actually need a lamp as things are, on my side of the bed at least, exactly where I expect them to be.

I built my own using a woodworking magazine photo: pin des Landes with cherry stain, square-section tapered legs, and a single drawer. Drawer contains passport, driving licence, car papers, ID card etc., plus keys, a couple of Opinels, a Laguiole, a small flick-knife and several kilos of small change.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

My bedside table isn't really beside my bed. It's across the room.
This ensures that I have to get up to switch off the alarm - which means that there's a reasonable chance that I'll stay awake.
Anyway, on my bed afar table there's a Braun analog alarm clock, and a Richard Sapper Tizio lamp operated by a radio-controlled switch which is blu-tacked to the side of my bed.
Inside the two drawers are books, more books and a pair of binoculars.

There isn't space in our bedroom for a bedside table on my side (we got a Euro kingsize bed which is usefully wide) so Kim built some open shelves to fit the exact gap.

The top shelf has The Satan and fire alerting module all wired into the house alerting system. Sometimes Percival a corduroy green fish is there too. The middle shelf has a micro-USB lead for my old smartphone which does for IRC (controlling house system) and ebooks (which would be physical books if I could read them anymore). Anything else is likely to fall off the shelves.

Lower shelf is dust, hairballs and the sort of crap that hides under the bed for the years between deep cleans.

We each have a three drawer unit which neatly fills the space between the bed and the wall (on MrsC's side) and the bed and the chimney breast (on my side).
Bottom drawer: socks.
Middle drawer: underwear and hankies
Top drawer: medication, foreign currency, beard trimmers, various charity pin badges, all the stuff which I can't think of anywhere else for it to go. A bit of a pain in some ways.
((ETA))
On top: charging station for phone and watch, jewellery boxes, coaster for (plastic) water glass or coffee depending on time of day, lamp, Kindle, notepad and pen.

Basically too much everywhere

It doesn't have an 'in'.

There is a chest of drawers reasonably close by with bedside lamp and collection of lots and lots of extremely hard drugs.

Watches, some odd bike bits, a lot of back issues of Viz, ties, passport.

The other one has the johnnies, lube and bondage gear.

I can't read so I don't have books in my bedside table.
I do have
  • several packs of felt tip pens
  • a large black vibrator
  • handcream
  • facecream
  • deodorant
  • travel speakers
  • a sticker book
  • sudoko book
  • a few toy frogs of various sizes
  • ancient gift bag(s)
  • an underused diary (for thoughts, not plans)
  • the travel case for my electrical toys
On top
  • Lamp
  • the wrong glasses
  • all the cables
  • a pad for writing crucial lists.

...Glass of water.

Not a beaker?
One like this?

Yes, I suspect that’s what Pingu was ever so subtly hinting at.

But nothing less than Waterford Crystal will do for Basil’s dunking needs, obviously.
