I hate the smell of new cars - all plasticky.  it takes about two years to go away.

My car smells faintly of petrol inside.

I like the way cars smell in southern Europe. They smell of hot rubber and oil and petrolly. In the UK the weather isn't warm enough often enough for them to smell like that.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I like the smell of old bicycles lurking in a shed, eager to be taken out & ridden...

This is probably another reason why I have never learned to drive - I can't stand the hideous plastic smell of car interiors. It makes me want to puke.

I have never bought a new car. I used to like the leathery smell of old ones though. I had an Austin Cambridge for many years and it definitely had a comfort factor to it......

I love the smell of my car when I've just cleaned and conditioned the leather seats. It's definitely nicer than the chemically-plastic smell of new cars, and adds perfectly to the gentlemans' club ambience of comfy leather sofas and polished wood (as I waft down the road with a good single malt in cut crystal held in one hand and cigar in the other - that's why Jaguar fit their cars with auto boxes and power steering).

The smell of Proofide on a Brooks just doesn't provoke the same emotional response, sadly.

There is also something rather special about the ancient-oil and slightly musty leather smell of working classic cars; it is a hard earned honest aroma that makes you appreciate the history of the vehicle.

But what about the smell of Gunk vapourising off a Brit parallel twin when you fire it up after cleaning the barrels.

A while ago I started talking to a hippy in a pub. He gave me a lift home in an old Hillman.

That old car smell is pretty good too.

I loved the smell of my BMW528i - not new, but still had that great leather smell in it.

Why waste all that money on a new car?  Just spray your old one.

Isn't this a line from the film Christine?
"There's nothing that smells better than a new car - 'cept maybe for [word I probably can't use here except in NWS]" says the old guy selling the haunted car.

When I was a kid and we didn't have a car, one of the things I disliked about getting a ride in other people's cars was the smell. Adults always said it was the petrol, but I think it was actually the plasticky, stale air smell. Oil, though, whether on a bicycle chain or burning off a motorbike, smells good to me. But nowhere near as good as olive oil with a bit of garlic in it...
