My bug out bike
« on: 10 June, 2008, 01:46:08 pm »
Bought from eBay for the princely sum of £51* for a colleague, it was a little too big for her.

But just the right size for me  :D

It appears never to have actually been ridden - the rims still have the anodising on them and the brake blocks were totally unworn.  I think it has been serviced in the last year or two because it has newish tyres and the transmission is nicely, possibly over-lubed.

The frame has tiny spots of surface rust from storage, but nothing even vaguely worrying and it rides absolutely perfectly.  The grips have split a little, but again, nothing worth worrying about.

I've slapped a cheap 'pooter, a B17, ATACs anna second hand Specialized rack on it and it's good to go.  Voila - one indestructable classic nineties hardtail, all ready for riding out of TEOTWAWKI**

It's going to live in the bike bunker as my "go-to" bike.  Every fortnight, it'll get the tyres pumped up and a quick check over.  All ready for loading up with my bug out gear in case the balloon goes up.

Those 2" tyres take some bloody work, though!

Cracking bike. I love late 80s early 90s hardtails. They just look right. Sort of like a Landrover does. No frills just bomb proof.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Nice find. A pity for your colleague.

I'm picturing the scenes when the oil runs out and there aren't enough good bikes to go around. We will be hittng the trails and riding as far away as possible from civilisation to keep our bikes safe! :D

Are you bugging out on those chunkies this weekend?
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Oh yes.

Chunkies and a pair of front panniers on the back.

A strange mixture of lightweight kit and nuke-proof steed  :D

Stay away from big tyres... they are the devil's spawn (I speak from recent personal experience as you know!!!)

Big knobbly tyres without centre ridge = HARD WORK

With slicks or a centre ridge it should be much easier.

Looks lovely!

I had a Specialized Rockhopper from 1986-1989...

Seeing that Mtb leads me to think that I should reclaim my Cannondale M800 Beast of the East, circa 1992,from the dark recesses of my daughter's garage.
I took the nobblies off, fitted semi-slicks,mudgaurds, front & rear panniers & used it for fully loaded cycle camping.

or has it got those funny Specialized slotted drop outs with no slot?

Are those chainrings the egg shaped Biopace ones?
