OK, it was a bit contrived [1] but.. for sheer entertainment it was great. The only downside was Callum Skinner breaking a collarbone in the sprint - the banking is somewhat unforgiving.

The Derney race was unreal - never seen anything like it before. Television doesn't capture the sheer smell and sound as riders hurtle round the track at up to 75kph.  :o

You are really close to the action, and for photographers there is plenty of light with a modern dSLR at f4 (about 1/160 at iso 800)

Good parking at the Velodrome but shocking signing trying to get there by bike. Some nice dutch style segregated cycle path in Glasgow though.

Photos appearing - the fire balls were warm, even at that distance..

and a few appearances by this man with bikes old:

[1] The final Kierin couldn't have been more of a crowdpleasing result if it had been scripted. Err..

Watch again on iPlayer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00yhvyd I didn't realise Callum Skinner had ridden down the banking on just the front wheel when he crashed..

Graeme Obree turned up at the opening of the Wales National Velodrome a few years ago as well - did a few laps on Old Faithful and then walked round the track selling copies of his autobiography from a plastic bag.  :-\

Great to see the track opening, it will be hugely successful.
