The flag poles are flying horizontally

Now that is windy!

Quite windy up north today too:-

'Recent gust of 110 MPH at the tunnel mouth and there are heavy snowshowers coming through now. Snowsports and the Mountain Railway will not open today. If the forecasts are correct, it does not look promising for us to be able to offer any snowsports for the next few days.'
weather station seems to have gone orf scale up there quite a lot of 183 kph / 99knots gusts---imagine that consistency due to anemometer losing itself  ???
....after the `tarte de pommes`, and  fortified by a couple of shots of limoncellos,  I flew up the Col de Bavella whilst thunderstorms rolled around the peaks above

Windy over here, I'll say. The flag poles are flying horizontally. Take care Steve.

Anyhow, The big news appears to be that the The Race IS ON! Tarzan in underway, currently heading south along Florida's eastern seaboard, at a brisk 21 MPH.

We lost all our flags and flag poles on Thursday night, think they may be in Caithness now ;D

I'm in Chard. Please let it be known that it's windy. I'm on fixed and have been struggling. Also 1700m climbing in 120k so far. Rice cakes are good but need something filling. This is my first stop!

Teethgrinder's response to someone asking what his fuel is-

"Cake, all day breakfasts, KFC, fish and chips. Go with what you crave. Sweet stuff only works upto about 120 miles."
Thank you so much for the most wonderful sig line evva.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

I have bravely sent HK out into the cold, cruel world to meet up with Teethgrinder and to ride back here with him. OK, it wasn't strictly necessary, seeing as we sent him a GPS track with the best route (to average 15+mph) to our place but it'll give them a chance to chat.

I expect that my role will be limited to serving dinner and kicking him out of bed in the morning. He can't afford those more specialist services, not without having to justify his excessive expenses to fidgetbuzz.  ;)

Well I just had my first (and possibly last) sight of Steve "in the flesh" as he passed the end of our road. Not knowing him, and not wanting to disturb his rhythm with random cries, I just silently wished him well on his way. What a man.

I've been out all day, just got in and logged into the tracker, as you do, and have just noticed he's passing through Amersham via the A413 from Missenden. I'd be happy to see them both get off that stretch, not the most pleasant of roads is that. Where are they heading? [Guess I'll know when the tracker stops!]

I'll have to put it on an MP3 player for TG when he wanders up this way.

Tell me about it. I had 218km almost all of which was slog.

Not a route Steve would have chosen. Nor I. Laney, muddy and even one unsurfaced cycle path. I rejected that and took the much faster main road.

I'll be interested to see how Steve got on today. I averaged under 20kph moving.

He's been getting some speed up on A413....I went out for a mere 60k ride this evening & the conditions are actually very good now, so I reckon he's probably enjoying it a lot more than this morning....
DJR (Dave Russell) now retired. Carbon Beone parts bin special retired to turbo trainer, Brompton broken, as was I, Whyte Suffolk dismantled and sold. Now have Mason Definition and Orbea M20i.

The wind dropped late on so a strategy might have been to head east first. But if the wind didn't drop much it'd be a problem. It's been relatively mild today but dropped to about 4.5 after sunset.

I would guess that since Tarzan has been travelling very much in straight lines all day, that his Strava total will not be greatly in excess of his tracker total. Of course, he has about another 2 hours' daylight time (Dez tells me that sunset in Florida is 5.47pm) so should notch up at least another 35-40 miles. Steve should be finishing in the next half-hour.

It's all gone a bit quiet down there on the tracker front in Ricky for the last 30mins or so.

So far, showered, fed, tea-ed up (which takes a surprising amount!) and lots of batteries on charge. Currently fiddling with GPSs and suchlike while his clothes finish in the machine.

I'm about to put a bit of oil on his chain (not a euphemism) and wash his bidons (might be).

Apparently the UMCA has got its knickers in a complete twist about a photo of Steve with an unopened bottle of wine behind him.

What a bunch of plonkers!
