City Navigator from SD card to SD card?
« on: 24 May, 2009, 11:18:19 pm »
I've just jumped into the water and bought a Garmin Legend HCx.  Having tested it out with a week in the hills (no bikes involved, I'm greatly impressed with its reliability in comparison to the Mk 1 Summit that I used to own.

With an eye to cycling, can I get a City Navigator SD card and copy its contents onto the current SD card on which I have loaded the SMC contour maps?  Or do I have to go for the more expensive DVD to load the two in together?  I'm not particularly interested in route planning in Map Source, more likely to use other software for that purpose.

The GPS has to have its mapping data in a single "gmapsupp.img" file on the card, so you'd have to get the two data sets merged together somehow. There are (apparently) methods of using SD card data in Mapsource, so it may be possible but you'd have a fair amount of hunting around to do it.
That's quite apart from any copy protection there may be on the CN SD card.
In the end it's probably easier to get the DVD version.

Does DVD cost much more anyway? GPSW seem to have it at the same price

The SD card data is tied to the serial number of the SD card.

So, very unlikely you can crack it.
It is simpler than it looks.

Thanks - 'tis as I feared, then   :(

I asked because I've seen City Navigator GB on SD card for under £40.  I don't really have a need for the European mapping.

I shall just have to save my pennies for a bit longer!
