Some (most?) of the Slavic languages are phonetic.  German is pretty close.  Any others?
Hungarian is very WYHIWYW, which is the only simple thing about it.

It is still my bugbear that my daughter, who is bilingual, but had only been in England 12 months, "failed" the 11+ by 3 points, when getting two more word spellings correct would have got into grammar school. She would have applied Hungarian spelling conventions to English words and thus got them wrong.

The best one I know is Sowerby Bridge.  While everyone agrees on the Bridge part, there are three different pronunciations of 'Sowerby' used by locals! :o

All the SB locals I know (including Mum who is from there) call it Sorby. But it wouldn't surprise me to find variations.
There's no vibrations, but wait.

How the heck did I manage to go abroad without my normal handbag stash of Buscopan??

And more importantly, how did I truly succeed in this complete fail by going to a country that actually doesn't stock it?  Not even as a prescription only??

Thank goodness they at least sell Naproxen-over the counter, even!

I may be somewhat grumpy by the time I get home to my own little corner of the UK this evening!

I recall the BBC controversy over the pronunciation of Kabul, when the Russians went into Afghanistan. Everyone had previously placed the emphasis on the second syllable but the BBC decided to change the pronunciation to "Karble" (as in Vince Karble) because that was how the Kabullians pronounced it. I didn't notice the residents of Saaaaaarfend, Acne and Rovrive being offered the same respect though.

I used to WFH on an occassional basis & it was a pain in the ass.

Doing it regularly or permenantly:as I do: it becomes much easier

Someone from head office saw some of the non-US cars one day, & was horrified that drivers were exposed to the mind-boggling complexity (for Leftpondians) of manual gear changing.

Probably true.  My mate Sacramento John has a similarly-sized Ford Ranger pickup, also with a manual 'box', and that doesn't have idiot lights relating to the gears.

In other news, I searched my trousis again.  I still didn't find the missing button, but I did find a very shiny 20p coin

Edit:  Coin shininess due to having been through the washing machine a Several of times.  I believe this is called money laundering.

No one can pronounce Solihull correctly either.

tbh, though I've passed through many times, I'm not sure.  I've always said 'Sollyull'.

Mind you, they could put a blue rosette on a donkey & get it elected in Penrith.

Oh no - they already did!

"so-lee-hull" with stress on the last syllable is how I think it should be said, and I lived there 40+ years. Mind you, the North Solihull upstarts that the town was given in 1974 might have a different idea.

Give the man a cigar! :) As you say, the "oo" is quite short. All Hungarian words have the stress on the first syllable. That's why many Magyars can sound a bit tedious when speaking English, as they transfer that speech pattern to the new language. And they have the classic v & w confusion.

What a gorgeous day. Light breezes, sunshine, temperature in the mid 20s. I have all my windows open, enjoying the late season air.

So - the council turn up with three chainsaws and two fuck-off chippers to clear the path between the main road and Tesco. I can't hear myself think. Guys - shouldn't you do that in the Autumn? Oh... hang on...

Broken spoke on Orange Bling.  Long way from home (i.e. Cambridge), and it's on the outside of the disk-brake side, so I need a Shimano Special Tool(TM) to take the disk off.

AND the blingy black anodised spokes are £1 a throw.

So I hope I'll have time to fix this AND do the ironing when I get home tomorrow, before setting out to get to the FNRttS.
