Songs with absolutely no intro
« on: 25 August, 2013, 07:21:35 am »
Not even the main riff or even a "1.2.3.4" - straight into the verse or chorus with the whole band.  These are a bit of a rarity, probably because they're difficult to play live.  However:

Pulling Mussels From A Shell - Squeeze
Penny Lane - The Beatles

Any others?

One that *sounds* as if it hasn't got an intro is "Virginia Plain" by Roxy Music.  The intro is very quiet, apparently a Bryan Ferry gag to make people jump after they'd turned the volume right up to hear it, and is often skipped when the song is played on the radio.

Do keep up  ;)

The Beatles did rather a lot of them, and Beatles imitators like Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene have the odd song that does the same thing.

.....

Penny Lane - The Beatles

Penny Lane comes in with vocals, bass and piano. The drums come in a few bars later.  So that's not the whole band! Quite a lot of the other answers given fail on this too  :P

An obvious correct answer is Clapton's version of I shot the sherrif - vocals, keys, drums, guitar and bass all in together. Oh and backing vocals too  :P
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Billy, did you notice that the clip runs for 5.41?  So maybe there was an intro - or maybe an encore?!

How do we know it's a song? It could equally be a string quartet piece.

Does "One step beyond" by Madness count?

Anyways.  Queen's "We are the champions" if it's  not been linked to.

Even if you took away Chas Smash's vocal intro, the song is still kicked off by the sax and the sax only.

No! Vocals, then piano, then bass. Guitar some time later then finally drums.

Ah, scrutinised the OP.  Damn, this is hard!

There are a few songs I remember as having no intro (such as Buzzcocks "Oh Shit") but on checking they do and it's just my mind ear skipping the intro.

The Ramones strike me as a band that would just jump right into it.  They weren't a band for pissing about.  But would need to dig out their CD from my stack.

I think there is a Kraftwerk on their Radio Aktiv album.  Possibly Die Stimme der Energie.  Will check later...

Bosser Huit Heures by Trust is the only contender I can think of.

No, but it's a class opening, whatever category it goes into!
