Nice find.

I was actually employed to work in Spacecraft Operations, although I've since found myself doing more and more Spacecraft Engineering, so this should be an interesting read.

I've always found it surprising how little information is passed around in the community, people are surprisingly reticent to discuss operations and their experiences, although I guess failures are never going to be something to brag about. I've found that "lessons learnt" documents are often some of the most insightful and useful to read, and the HST definitely had some very significant problems early on, most of which they ultimately solved.
Actually, it is rocket science.

And most of which could have been entirely avoided had those nice folks at the No Such Agency been willing to fess up: 'spare parts? Oh yeah, we've got a couple of those down the back of the tearoom sofas...'

Interesting on the institutional memory point; I vaguely know someone who's doing her PhD on the history of the UCL MSSL, who's been doing lots of oral history, and she made a similar point.

Don't get me started on MSSL! ;D

I was working at Perkin-Elmer on and off from 1984 to 1991, both in the U.K. and Connecticut.

"lessons learnt" documents are often some of the most inciteful

Given the potential reactions, I reckon that's a pretty good Freudian typo ...

I'm not even sure when or how I'd actually use inciteful correctly, especially since I'm not a dodgy USA President!

I remember it referred to as Hubble Hubble toil and trouble.
