Chevy Chase 3 and The Mosstrooper 30 April and 01 May
« on: 16 January, 2011, 08:18:52 pm »
Here's  an opportunity to  ride a  200 and 300 back-to- back starting from Morpeth (near  Newcastle) good  transport  links  and basic camping.
Both rides  are scenic, but  of  course  not  flat  - although  there are no gratuitous hills just the means to get  another  good  view.
The  Chevy chase has  been  re-routed this year, lots of well surfaced lanes you go through the  Otterburn Rangeshttp://www.otterburnranges.co.uk/
If  anyone  is  interested I will post the  routes.

I'll be riding both of these.

Will there be camping at the start?

I have already sent off an entry for the Mosstrooper... I could be tempted to do the Chevy Chase as well... 500km in 2 days would be good training for PBP... with Bank Holiday Monday a day of rest...

I've cycled across the ranges once before... it can be very bleak particularly if the prevailing wind blows

I've been meaning to do the Chevy Chase for a while now - seems a shame not to, as there are only a few weeks when the Otterburn Ranges are open.

The 300 is the Saturday and the 200 the Sunday - a very good weekend indeed, with bank holidays either side.  A good way to avoid the royal wedding.

I'm probably in for the 300, leaving childers in the care of grandparents. A peek at the route'd be nice, see how much lard I need to shed. I think the grandparents will revolt if I suggested doing the 200 too.

I've ridden the Chevy Chase three times now and it's a grand route.

I think I'll come down and do the 300 as well and make a weekend of it.
It didn't look at all like that in the photographs

O.K. got  every ones interest in the route let's have some  advice on the best way to do that, goggle  maps? etc...
I would like simple way of posting a  link to a  url  - that could be  a  file on my isp's webspace.
(I have done the Chevy on Bike hike have  some screen shots as .tif's but  posting them will be  a breach of the eula) -shall I be naughty?

Wowbagger's managed to make Bikehike routes public, and I think we agreed on Sunday that Bikehike is the best going, since it gives you the detail of the OS Landranger maps.

Hi I am a total newcomer to Audax,

I have a 100k lined up for March - Gilpins Gallop and being Newcastle based was considering the Chevy Chase, I have cycled a bit in Northumberland and have cycled many of these roads, my only concern is that I might be biting off too much attempting a 200k at the back end of April.

I can pretty much handle 50 miles at the moment but can't really get my head around stepping up to 200k.

Anyone think I am mad for considering it?

You'll be fine.  Chevy Chase (though I haven't ridden it) is considerably hillier than Gilpin's Gallop, but there's a couple of months between the two, so that's plenty of time to train yourself up.

I would recommend an intermediate distance, so that you build up the miles.  A ride of 140 or 160 kilometre in the middle of April would be ideal.  162 kilometres is near-as-dammit 100 miles, so that would make a satisfying target, and a useful bridge to the 200 km.

I'm only in Darlington, so not that far away.  It's good to have another north east member.

Welcome Keggy 10... YACF members from the North East are a rare breed... as Deano says gradually build up the distance

Mosstrooper  route on bike-hike ; http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?lnk=http://www.gremlyn.f9.co.uk/ah_files/Mosstrooper.gpx

Warning - for some  reason the  profile  dries up at  190Km -  hiding the  last  few  hills  :)

I was wondering if this might qualify for a Northumbrian SR:

Chevy Chase 200
Mosstrooper 300
Hot Trodd/Lanchester 400
Border Raid 600

I'm not fussed about a badge - but I doubt there'll be more than a dozen people planning that series.

Any word on the camping situation?  I'm planning to go up on the Friday to camp (it's as good a way as any to avoid the royal wedding insanity) and leave my gear there through the Saturday & Sunday.

S'pose I could just ask Bob H if I can kip in his servants' wing ;)

Mosstroopers is down as having 2,000m of climbing. Doesn't seem like that much climbing for a 300km.
