What makes you happy in the kitchen?
« on: 24 May, 2017, 08:47:22 pm »
There's quite a lot that gives me pleasure in a fairly low key way - things like my knives - but each time I reach for my masala dabba
it makes me happy.

OK, I've only had it for a couple of years, but it still does it for me. What does it for you?

(full declaration - this is a stock image, mine has ground cumin, coriander, chilli, turmeric, cassia bark, cinnamon stick, cardamon pod)

The view.
My butchers block on wheels.
But mostly the view.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Our view's pretty good, too, out across the meadow and down to the river, with the other half of the village opposite and the hills rising beyond.  That works; and the dogs hanging around for scraps.

Other than that it's a great heap of veggie stuff chopped & ready to go into something Cajun.  And the smell of roasting coffee.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

+1.  Absence of piles of washing up (washing up is usually my job thobut, so it's more a case of people not creating it than doing it).  I'm easily pleased.

A good sharp knife.

True. I sharpened The Big Knife the other day. It's nice and, umm, sharp, now.

My diamond steel is great for that. It'll even sharpen ceramic knives.  It had to be run in, though - the cheap ones lose odd bits at first.

Good quality, well designed, sharp knives.

A gas hob, but an electric oven (the new kitchen will have two, a conventional one and a steam oven).

Loud music.

Everything else is optional gravy.

The view from my kitchen is nice (if you like big suburban gardens) with added cat antic entertainments.

What makes me unhappy in the kitchen is a sticky counter from unwiped fruit cutting. GGGRRR...

This house came with an Aga, which was a bit intimidating at first.  We debated replacing it with a conventional cooker, but got used to its ways before we came to a conclusion.  So it stayed.

It somehow enforces a more relaxed attitude to food preparation— no fiddlng with knobs or worrying about oven temperature.  No cleaning the oven either.

There are downsides.
