How was that possibly comfy? It's not a soft bag, it's hard, lumpy, generally uncomfortable to lie on (I guess, I've never tried). The carpet by itself would have to be easier. Presumably he did it since he's a cat, and they are required to sleep on things that you've foolishly left lying about!
