I've not read all of this thread, partly to avoid the moanings. MJ wasn't Ellington, or Bach, or Elvis, but he was a man who went through a profoundly weird childhood, and still managed to produce a lot of thoroughly uplifting music, and could dance like not many others. I think that those things suggest we should say "thanks", not slag the bloke off - there's plenty of much more suitable candidates for that in the world.

should be cycling

Aye, he produced a lot of good records.  But a lot of pompous crap as well.  He tried to overcome an abusive childhood (as do far far too many in our societies), only to fall into a self-destructive adulthood.

He isn't a saint.  The hagiography is as sickening now as it was for Diana.  He was a good musician and a good dancer.  And it's sad that he died so young, on the verge of a comeback.

Did he change contemporary dance?  There isn't a single move he pulled that James Brown hadn't done years before (and many older than that)

Did James Brown give us dancing zombies?

Yes. He went into a graveyard and said...

Yeah, but they got up and just lurched about. Michael Jackson gave them choreography!

Not my favourite type of music, but certainly an inspired one from a talented man.

Will the loony fans accept this?

How long untill the Jackson sightings begin?

To convince them he is really gone you would have to display his head on a spike outside his old Neverland Ranch.

Demarol/demerol/pethidine. Pethidine is nice stuff, & I think it would be easy to become dependent on it.

An LA cop was on the BBC news today saying they wanted to ask his doctor questions, & were doing toxicology tests. I presume that when doctors with scruples wouldn't give him as many painkillers as he wanted, Jacko did the same as he did when his plastic surgeons refused to do what he wanted: sacked them & found someone less scrupulous.

Well, with a reported $300,000,000 debt, his estate will need all the royalties it can get.

That debt won't stop a lot of wrangling over who has the rights to the estate.  And we can anticipate an unseemly row over the custody of the children.

Not surprised, a good way of hiding money from creditors and the tax man.

He can't get at it but the childrens future is safe.

Will that be the one that has been with his plastic surgeon the last twenty years  ;)

In all the tributes and blurb, I haven't heard anyone talk about how much Michael Jackson music of the future we're going to miss now he's dead. It's like everyone had just accepted that his good music days were over years ago and all the future was going to give us from him was more bizarreness.

But that's the point he's produced little critically acclaimed music since Thriller. his best days were over some time ago, musically he seems pretty much a spent force, all we had left was his bizarreness.

I think his last major hit was probably Earth Song, and that was a bit odd.  His best stuff was on Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad.  After that there was Black and White and...erm...

Pop quiz - what was his first UK Number One?

Yup.

Recently he was very much a pale imitation of his earlier days.
