Derbyshire Pie Run X: 13 September 2014
« on: 13 August, 2014, 10:38:20 pm »
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am proud to present the 10th, great, Derbyshire Pie Run. At this point I feel like saying something Paxman-ish like "We all know the rules so let's just get on with it, shall we?", but for the sake of anyone who hasn't been before, it's going to be quite a lot like the previous rides (and for anyone who hasn't been on any of the previous iterations, here's what they mostly look like).

So it'll be a 10 for 10:30-ish start at Derby train station for a gentle, social but unavoidably hilly (they won't move the pub - I've checked) 40 or so mile ride in good company with great beer and fantastic pork (and other) pies.

Vegetarians are welcome. Previous non-meat eating DP Runners have managed to find enough to eat to make it back to the station without having to forage on the verges.

We'll probably get back to Derby between 3:30 and 4:30pm. If there's any interest we could swing by the new bike shop/café/garage too.

I might design a new route at some point, but there's a chance that I'll just use last year's (but without the me-falling-off-my-bike-on-the-flat-straight-bit bit).

Would be lovely to see some of you, whether it's for the first time, or the tenth.

Paul.

That date's a clash with the Tamworth CC audaxes, but noted anyway.  Will make a decision nearer the time.

I'm slightly surprised by the idea that the Pie Run might have/be competition. If you can tell me what your decision-making criteria are, and as long as they are within my geographical/meteorological control, I will do my best to win you over to the crusty side.

Bah!  I've never done this one.  I've got the first 2 weeks in September booked off for a tour, destination as yet unknown!  So I'm likely to be traveling back home on the 13th.

With you in Spirit on this one. I'll do the Pies and miss the run if that's okay. I promise not to go for the lowest common denominator (Fray-Bentos) and will probably have one of the Hornby (8 miles from Lancaster) butcher's own Growlers of distinction.

So Derbyshire is not excluded?

I'll do the Pies and miss the run.

Hmm - interesting idea for an alternative event. Get rid of all that bike-riding frippary.

Maybe next year.

I'll inform the pub in advance. Pork, Huntsman, or stilton-topped?

Yet again I will express tentative interest.   I'll discus this with Mlle PB in a week or so.

Wasn't that basically what happened last year?   ;D

The DPR is nothing if not pragmatic. It's a go with the flow ride. :smug:

OK, so I have to sort out trains to and from Derby on 13th, unless I travel up on 12th and camp...

I'm looking at arriving in Derby at 10.03 (involves the 6.32 from Prittlewell) and leaving again at 6.20pm. That should get me home just before 10.

That 6.20 will allow for an ale or two, should that become a necessity.

£34 return on the OBRC.

Edit: tickets bought

Looking forward to you joining us, WB. 6.20 should comfortably allow for an ale. Or two.

Brew X ( ;) - not just an M&B brand) is now in my diary.

I shall join in (where's the smiley for crossed fingers?).

A ruptured Achilles tendon has put paid to me taking part in this. 6 to 8 weeks recovery.

Any old buggers want to go from London or Southend? I have rail tickets with bike reservations for the 8.27 from St. P. and back again from Derby at 18.20. Railcard needed.

I'm still hoping to join the ride, though cardiac problems will mean I'll be climbing at around 50% of normal speed if I'm lucky. I'll ride the invalid carriage, but will still be slow uphill.

I'm still planning to be there - I'll be riding up from the south if anyone wants to join me.  Should be at the station sometime after 10 AM.  I assume the western side, off Midland Road is where we'll be meeting?

I still won't be there, despite much better progress along the road to recovery than I dared hope.

Unfortunately #1 son has chosen our team to follow in teh 2014 / 15 FA cup.   It is Rugby Town and they are playing Chasetown on Saturday at 15:00.

I yearn for one of those pork pies.   :-\

There is going to be a year when I do the Dun Run, the Pie Run and more but it will not be 2014.
