Could it be functioning as a makeshift luggage support? Or perhaps as a handle for lifting it on to the roof of a car, or wherever?

I was thinking about a child seat on a rear rack. There are two brazed bits above the rear caliper that are probably there for such a rack.

Would be my guess. Though the lack of tape or plugs suggests that hasn't happened for a while.

This saddle was my all round favourite when I was racing in the late 80's, early 90's. I tried one recently, it was horrible. Either they are not what they used to be, or my bum has changed of shape in the mean time

I've always used a Turbo and still do. I did buy a Rolls to try but didn't like it.

Edit: I've just noticed there's a rear rack, but it doesn't seem to be attached to the seatstays but to the mudguard.

I've used one on at least 1 bike since the 90's and havent noticed any change. The price put me off buying for 2 of my newer bikes last year. I guess I can get on OK with different saddles.

Blimey - that looks like a vertical tandem bike! Where does the stocker sit - inside the triangle?
