In the current Belgium-Slovakia match, it sounds to me that the crowd are chanting "V-A-R! V-A-R!"

Maybe they are, given that Belgium had a goal disallowed by that means.

Actually the second VAR intervention was a new one for me, it seems that the ball has a microchip built into it that
can detect when something touches it, you could hardly see that the Belgian lad used his hand but it was visible on the special measuring device they showed in sync with the video image. Not sure if that was the first time it was used but I haven't seen it before.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/40371283/var-review-why-romelu-lukaku-equaliser-belgium-was-ruled-lois-openda-handball

Now the above still doesn't mean it should have been disallowed, there are still rules that govern if the arm position/motion was intentional or natural. Apparently this has changed over time and I don't know what the rule is anymore. It all looked harsh to me.

Regards,

Alan

It would have helped if the commentators had explained this at the time.  Not as if they had anything better to talk about.  ::-)

If the community singing was worth goals Scotland would be 3-0 up already.  Poor show, you Schnibbles.

Groan.
I'm trying to take an interest in the footballer's cup of footballing, particularly as Scotland are fighting for their lives, but it just goes on too bloody long.

I think TV's Gary Lineker just gave them a slagging but since the only studio pundit who actually speaks recognisable English rather than Punditese is the guest FOREIGN I'm not 100% sure :demon:

The kind of performance you expect from Engerland... Some  hope, but mostly a bit lost and below par.

That was a vintage performance by England...

As in "a vintage display of being unable to retain possession for more than a couple of passes".  :P

I’ve got John Lydon on Tuesday, so I shall be spared…

I wonder how many of the England fans have got the feeling they've been cheated?  :demon:

Gary did a slag off of Kane.

The bloke is Thomas Frank, I think. Mangler of Brentford…

Is there a chance that England will get knocked out before 4th July (well, there's still a chance they won't qualify...)? And if so, what, if any, are the likely effect on people's voting patterns?

For those of us who have been here since 1970, and more significantly 1974, it's the natural order of things....eventually you learn to live with these things - expectation is always greater than reality.
Although, let's be fair.....England have had really good teams and played isolated games of excellence. Problem is.......so have other countries done the same...and been more consistent. Which is why other countires have won competitions. And we haven't.

Don't worry about it. I can say that as somebody born in 1959. It's only taken me 55 yrs to accept the natural order of things.
Face facts....this year, we've had lots of rain, it's been miserable, but the sun HAS come out now, so grab a beer [alcoholic or non] and be happy ;-0
It's only entertainment.  ;)

All good advice!

As one who has always gravitated towards the Welsh side of my family rather than the English, I have two totally conflicting attitudes which happily sit side-by-side in my brain: if England are really good and do well, I'm pleased for them. if they don't, I'm quite happy to laugh at them.

This only applies to football. In rugby, it's a very rare match in which I want England to win.  :P

I went out on my bike and caught the finish but had to switch over as Alan Shearer's relentless complaining was a bit much.

There's always a dull draw in qualifying, it's the law.

But that Spain-Italy match got a bit spicy, nice to know you can always rely on Italian defenders to hack the tricky wingers when things aren't going their way.

And now France and Holland have agreed on a draw.

Pity poor Romelu Lukaku, who thus far has had more goals disallowed than any single player has managed to score.  Ah, Belgium!
