Proms 2024
« on: 16 June, 2024, 10:51:02 am »
I've been having a look through the schedule and mostly thinking "I really can't be arsed to traipse all the way over to West London and then back again late at night for that!" but there is the odd one.

I'm not surprised that one is sold out. Daniel Barenboim announced his retirement some months ago because of a "neurological disorder' but he clearly feels it's important enough to conduct this concert. The West-East Divan Orchestra is his own creation and celebrates (if that is the correct word in the current context) its 25th anniversary this year. Barenboim, although jewish, is persona non grata amongst quite a lot Israelis for rejecting permanent conflict as a way of running a country.

Edit: there is no mention of his illness on his Wikipedia page but there's a fair bit of detail here; https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/06/daniel-barenboim-step-down-berlin-state-opera-poor-health

I've just booked two tickets for 19th August - the St. John Passion. This year is the 300th anniversary of its first performance. I've sung in it before so know it pretty well.
