Something different Garden of Cosmic Speculation

I've been fascinated by that for years, but only open two days per year - think I'll nominate them to Right to Roam as the location of their next mass trespass.

 ;D ;D ;D

May 4th/5th this year  ;)

And it's sold out.  :'(

The Pretenders at Hull in the autumn.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I joined the Scottish Gardens mailing scheme and got notification of when tickets were going on sale (scotlandsgardens.org). 1st time successful since I moved to D&G

Think BC Camplight at the Crescent in York is next.

Is that with the full band or solo?

Saw him three times last year. Twice was just him and his piano, and both times were great, but the last one was at Shepherds Bush Empire with the full band and it was one of my gig highlights of the year. He was in full rock star mode. Totally brilliant.

Support was Personal Trainer who were also v.good indeed.

Magnetic Fields sounds fun. Just had a look at tickets for the London nights but "not available" - is that because they've already sold out? Nuts.

I'm old enough to have been at the Newcastle leg of Bob's "infamous" electric tour - first half acoustic, second with electricity.  Someone shouted, "Bobby, (obviously knew him personally) we've come to hear a folk-singer, not a rock-singer!"  To which, the response was, "And e've come to hear him, not you!"  BD only said one thing all night, I think.  It was, "Don't bug me, I'm a sick man."  I remember the "controversy" as being blown up by the press out of all proportion.  You had to be there.  It was a great concert, in at the start of something epochal.  It's also why I probably won't be going to see his upcoming shows - too many memories to keep intact!

Dylan remains at the top of my personal hit parade; I don't see him ever being knocked off.

A long time ago I was an intern at The Village Voice, home of the legendary writer Nat Hentoff, who wrote the liner notes for one of Dylan's albums. I asked him what his favourite was. Don't remember what he said(!), but he definitely didn't like "the newer stuff" circa the 80s, which I personally loved (Tight Connection To My Heart being a particular favourite).

Saw him live twice:
- The first time was in the venerable Scribner's Bookstore where I was working and he was buying. Sir Bob actually had to step out of my way as I walked by carrying a stack of books.
- The second time was on stage twentysomething years ago, about a million miles away from my seat, a birthday surprise from my wife. He came on after what seemed like ages and rushed through everything, as is his way. I think the only way to listen to him, as opposed to experience him, is plugged in.

My Young Lady has got tickets for a recording of Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics this Wednesday. She had better take me with her or I will be sad.

Nick Cave - Glasgow in November

3rd time lucky? 1st time I had tickets was suspended from work, in mental turmoil and sold the tickets, 2nd time was cancelled due to covid.

Looking forward to Lankum at Hackney Empire on Sunday 19th - saw them at the Roundhouse before Xmas and thought they were fantastic live, much stronger than just listening to them. Irish folk, but that doesn't begin to describe it!

Owing to a degree of diary incompetence, we've got a couple of spare tickets, so if anyone's interested ...

Would love to see Lankum but Sunday is a non-starter for me alas. Btw, did you listen to the OXN album that came out last year? I reckon it's even better than False Lankum.

I've got a couple of theatre outings coming up - London Tide and Boys From The Blackstuff, both at the NT.

Next music gig is Fat White Family at the Troxy in June, which I know will be truly awesome.

August brings another visit to the NT to see Mnemonic, plus an Evening with David Sedaris at the RFH.

Then it's O. at Whereelse in Margate in September, and Bodega at Earth in Hackney in October.

That's probably enough culture-vulturing to keep me busy for a while.

Well, Lankum was rather good - they're so strong live. False Lankum right through, in order.

Opener was Andy the Doorbum, who was incredibly striking and a really good match. Weird, mind - but wouldn't mind seeing him again.

Lankum back in London soon, Hammersmith in late October, and hints dropped on Sunday about a coming announcement of who the support is going to be (apparently someone they think they should be supporting).

Only a few days separate that from PSB at the Roundhouse, so that'll be busy, and I fancy Bonny Light Horseman there a month later. (Anaïs Mitchell's folk supergroup - good at the Barbican last year, though of course that's a much more formal setting.)

Of the things you mentioned at the National, only have tickets for BFTBS so far, but plan to get last minute cheapies for most of the rest of the season at some point (which is a point, the Brontë thing closes this week).

I signed up for NT membership for the priority booking (early access to cheap tickets). The Friday cheapies are great but rely on being able to take what's available at short notice, which is difficult when you live in the sticks.

Not much that really grabs me in the coming season though. I've seen The Importance of Being Earnest enough times that I'm not excited by the prospect of yet another production of it, even if it does have Doctor Who in it.

Looking forward to London Tide, though the reviews have not been great.

The Infinite Monkey Cage on 3rd June. Not at the BBC this time but the Royal Institution "due to circumstances outwith our control."

I do like a well placed "outwith".

Ticket binge today…

Katy J Pearson in Margate in Nov and London in Feb
Billy Nomates in Margate in Nov
Moonlandingz in London in Sept

Moonlandingz announcing live dates was a surprise - they’re a concert band formed as a side project of Eccentronic Research Council, and haven’t released anything since their first album in 2017. Also guitarist Saul Adamcewski quit Fat White Family during recording of their new album due to irreconcilable personal and artistic differences with frontman Lias Saoudi. Both are also members of Moonlandingz. I wonder if this means they have made up. Would be great if so - just in time for the FWF gig coming up in a couple of weeks…

Intrigued to know if this means there’s new Moonlandingz music on the way. I do hope so!

Ian Sweet (aka Jilian Medford) at the Lexington in October.  Indie/pop singer/songwriter from LA.  A few of her tracks have appeared on indie playlists recently and although not ground-breaking they're sufficiently well crafted & produced to make them stand out from others in the milieu.

As she's coming to the UK for just one gig it seems churlish not to pop along (especially as the Lexington is a few hundred yards up the road  ;D)

The Stranglers. Actually I'm more interested in seeing some local bands that I enjoy and finding some new stuff. This is all taking place at Guilfest this Saturday.
