agree about bringing back the beavers and re-opening flood plains.  I understand that they have done this in Germany and actually removed sections of barrier to actually generate a flood plain with good results.

In our local village there is still planning permission for houses to be built on a field which has flooded twice a year for the 4 years we have been here and the same for living memory of older residents!

Our local hospital wishes to build a drive-thru phlebotomy clinic (which patients will only be able to access by car - no walk ins, or access by bicycle/public transport) in the green belt... and on an area that is regularly flooded.

Soooo. There's been a flood, and the subject of building on flood plains comes up.

*sigh*

Building on flood plains. Is not in and of itself the bad idea.

Building shit buildings on flood planes however, that is a bad idea.

Let's take a Journey to the Dutch City of Maasbommel.

The city has been around in some form or other for at least a millennia. On the edge of the city, outside the protective dijks is a row of homes.

They look like any normal modern home. Sure the architect had some fun. But it's recognisably a home.

But if you look closer.

You notice a pillar.

These homes are built with a big concrete box that floats as their foundation. They are anchored to this pillar which keeps them fixed in x and y, but allows for movement in z.

Some of them are more obviously floating than others. (and hard to photograph). The idea being that these homes can handle the flooding. Water goes up, so does the house. Water goes down, so does the house. You may wanna keep an eye on the forecast and go park the car elsewhere when the water is gonna rise.

But it's a flood plane, and people can live on it.

Another option of course is to build things on stilts.

This is a hurricane resistant home in Texas. Designed to handle temporary flooding.

Having buildings on flood planes isn't inherently bad. Having the wrong buildings is. We just have to be a bit more open to the idea of new designs, and not the copy pasta shit that the developers tend to favour.

Ah, but when we criticise the building of homes on flood plains, it is from the perspective of a population that is used to having sufficient land so as not to need specialist building techniques. We also comment with the knowledge that our housing developers are profit driven money grabbing bastards who already employ cost cutting corner cutting building methods. There’s also the issue that in GB the flood plains serve a purpose of protecting other low lying areas where as in NL they employ much more aggressive (and obvious) flood protection schemes such as dykes.
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

Exactly. Can anybody tell me of any similar buildings already built in the uk?

Of course not, they would never get planning permission as they don't match the character of the area...

There are a couple of houses/holiday homes on the banks of the Thames between stains and Chertsey. There are also lots of vulnerable chalet structures along the same stretch but most have boats to escape in :)

It's a piece written about Edmonds and his opinions but not in any way supporting his opinions.

Why did NZ let him in?   Have they lost their marbles?

Try posting in the right thread, Mr L

Anti-cancel culture activist and occasional teacher Sideshow Birb sees M&S Christmas shitvert; wants it cancelled.

M&S advert ‘puts two fingers up to spirit of Christmas’, says headteacher who can't spell “Ebenezer”.

Thereby guaranteeing a metric fuckton of publicity for Marks & Sparks which they didn’t even have to pay for.

What I'm struggling to understand of our beloved media is how yesterday on LBC on the Nick Ferrari show (Yes, I know I shouldn't listen) the focus of discussion was on how antisemitic the M&S ad was as it appeared to be promoting the colours of the Palestinian flag. Yet elsewhere the ad was being criticised for appearing to be burning the colours of the Palestinian flag in a fireplace. WTF? ???

It's easy.  Right wingers everywhere determined to be outraged but they simply don't know why.

I am certain that freedom of cancel culture will be part of the Tory party manifesto for the next election.

Bear in mind the ad was saying do what you like, and disposing of symbols of Christmas that people may not be into. The bit in question was the burning of party hats - which were in Christmas colours of red, green and silver. Frankly it's a bit twisted to relate that to Palestine.
