Wooden thresholds - really really long ones
« on: 29 September, 2016, 06:47:50 pm »
Woofage Towers is getting some new patio doors soon. To cover the join between the (existing) wooden flooring and the new door frame we need a nice wooden threshold. Thing is, the doors are 4.5m wide. Where can I get a piece of oak (or engineered timber oak-a-like) long enough?

A chat with your local timber merchant would help thinks.

I would go to my local sawmill (in France).  Oak is much cheaper there despite the weak pound.  I got some lovely 5m lengths to go round the minstrels gallery a few years back.

Blewers timber (local to Woofage) do oak mouldings at their Kent depot, but I'd be surprised if they do them that long.

Most of the oak we buy in as rough sawn is 3.2 - 3.6 metre lengths. If it's an odd size or shape bit you need then you may need to get a joinery firm to machine something up for you - CNC moulding machines are more common than you expect.

Our local shed/decking specialists were able to knock up some custom posts to order that were considerably larger (in both girth and length) than their standard sizes. I expect you will have a firm local to you who can do similar.

The only caveat is to make sure they use properly seasoned wood - I don't think our guys did because the posts have warped a little. Not a huge problem with posts but probably best avoided with lintels.

You should be able to get that in kiln dried and plained to size from any decent timber merchants. It won't matter if it's in two pieces, as you can just scarf it together.

I'm assuming you're talking about trim and that the doors come with a complete frame.

Are you in the South West of England by any chance? I have a couple of contacts.

Go to this:

https://www.timbersource.co.uk/hardwood

You can order on the website whatever dimension you want, pay by card and 10 days later it'll turn up on your doorstep.  I recently bought a number of lengths of Western Red Cedar, machined to my sizes.  Brilliant service and not expensive.
