Ouch! There's nothing to do for broken ribs anyway, apart from not breathing too hard...

I can sneeze without pain so I'm hoping it's a crack at worst.  I've got a lot of physical work to do and I don't want to be off the bike for any longer than, say 4 days. My last ride was 6 days after the previous one and I could really feel the loss of form.

ETA: I'm thinking we should split off a thread from this one for self-inflicted wounds but ICBA to start it.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Another one that belongs on the feckulous div thread as well:
3-4 days later the sore ribs are still sore, and occasionally something goes click when I take a deep breath. But it's not every time, it's not a sharp pain and it doesn't always click in the same place, so who's worrying?
Did 146 km on Saturday. Had to take paracetamol at 30k but thereafter all was well.
Ribs hurt like hell yesterday.Seeing GP this afternoon to get a prescription for an X-ray.

Over on Twitter, mu good friend Anna was taken for a walk by her dog, who darted off, causing A to fall forwards onto her ribs.
We were regaled with pictures of some spectacular bruising.

After 11 days, she was running out of painkillers, ribs are clicking and she gets an X ray: 6 ribs broken, some in two places...

That sounds far worse than my case.  I've had no external bruising and the pain has been very similar to the pain you get after having a bad stitch that has taken a while to pop out.  The only painkiller I've taken was 1g of paracetamol on Saturday.  This morning I was out in the barn heaving planks about and stooping & lifting for a couple of hours with no serious discomfort.

ETA: Crikey, I just realised that even my GP is called Lagrange.

ETAA: who says maybe a very minor crack, carry on. Good.

Swimming these past few days has been glorious, high tides and few people.
Today I swam 1100 metres from Thames Estuary Yacht Club to the Old Jetty beach at Westcliff on Sea. 45 minutes of easy breast stroke.

Today's swim saw me with an escort boat, for about 100m, as the Thames Esuary Yacht Club was just about to start a race. I don't think I held the start up as the horns sounded about ten minutes after.

What a marvellous thread, well done everyone. I almost never hurt myself ofr get sick but this year I had a checkup colonoscophy for bowel cancer screening, all good, did not hurt, for me anyay. I was carrying the bike down four concrete steps and missed the first step, went up in the air and landed on the bike, there were some other proper bruises and nicks but the showpiece was landing on the back of the saddle which caught me in the ribs under the right armpit, properly winded me, there was talk of an ambulabce from bystanders. People were arriving minutes later, drawn by my intial yelp and subsequent noise of bloody hell. I thought cracked ribs, it felt a bit soft but hey, all good now. a small but intense bruise took a long time to appear.

Cataract op tomorrow, hopefully, been put off twice They mentioned issues between the done eye and the undone eye, I did not know it was as bad as mentioned earlier, or that there was no cycling afterwards for 3 weeks.

erm, mild reflux and a proper buggered up neck from a proper smash 20 years ago, it all works but stiff and hurts all the time. Had all the tests They could find 'nothig wrong whatsoever'.

Nothing wrong is a shorthand technical term. It usually means “we cannot see anything we can stick a knife or needle usefully in”.
Sometimes it means we know you have a problem but the 3mm slices done by the MRI scan do not show it.

I know, at that medical conclusion I leant forward quickly to open my mouth to say 'they is definitely something wrong' but he beat me to it by smiling and saying, 'all I mean is we cannot find anything wrong to act on', I was offered a cut nerve but declined.

Usual crap headline, we all have a 100% risk of death, no matter what we do.

Damn! I’ve not had an ear infection quite a few years and I’d forgotten how bad it can be. I’ve been ignoring it for a couple of days in the hope that it will go away, but this morning I decided I needed antibiotics. It was late (11:30am), and we’ll past the window of opportunity to bag a doctors appointment today,  but I pursued Dr Beardy to ring the surgery on my behalf1 because the alternative wou;d have been an emergency out of hours call to the county out of hours GP service (never a pleasant or efficient experience.

The receptionist was, as expected, brusk and negative, although not totally unhelpful. She offered to see if a doctor cou.d fit me in and would ring back with an update. In the event the GP2 rang back himself, spoke to Dr Beardy on my behalf and it was agreed that he would send a prescription for the updated version of my preferred treatment to the local Boots forthwith.

Given the tales I hear and read about the shocking difficulties people have in accessing a GP, I am again very thankful to my surgery for the care and attention they have delivered to me and my family over the years. Yes, I complain about the receptionist, but I recognise the shitty job they have, and the doctors have often got above and beyond to help.

1. The infection is in my better ear and I’ve always struggled to use my left ear on the phone.

2. Dr Sidhu, the now senior partner, who was the junior when we joined the surgery on moving here some years ago. He was the chap, who on being presented with my (then) 7yo boy, sought a second opinion from the senior partner because he’d never seen the mumps before. 😁
For every complex problem in the world, there is a simple and easily understood solution that’s wrong.

Realized when I set out today that working up a ladder in trainers is a bad idea: the arches of my feet didn't actually hurt but it's the first time in my life that they've felt tired on the bike.  I'll try my walking shoes tomorrow and go get a pair of safety shoes if they're not stiff enough.

Whilst walking on Mon I twisted my ankle on a wobbly rock. Not bad, I thought, anyway 8 mls later it was getting quite painful. I was staying at a hostel and as the night wore on and I did less the ankle stiffened and got quite painful. not looking good for my next two days. The next morning the ankle was much improved but not enough for what I had planned. Fortunately the Hostel wardens allowed me to move my the next two nights accommodation and I was able to drive home, I wasn't far from home, just using the hostels because I can. At home I was able to give the ankle some better attention, ice and elevation and rest. Today the ankle feels totally recovered and hasn't bothered me at all. I'm just amazed at how fast this recovery has been, our bodies are very clever.

Cancerous prostate gland removed on Monday. Had to stay in hospital for two extra nights due
to 'complications'. One of which involved me having a CT scan to determine (rule in or out) what
was wrong in my bladder area and why I was in so much pain (the bloke who had the same
procedure after me had no such issues).

Oral morphine was great, in that it allowed me to forget about the pain in my abdominal area (left
by the keyhole incisions).

Worst experience of the stay in hospital was the loud snoring, and the high-pitched moaning and
groaning by two other patients on the ward. The nursing staff were sympathetic, but said the two
patients were in to have their ailments treated, not their snoring. Fair enough.

The catheter is very sensitive where it enters my penis (that was the fear I had from the beginning), so will be glad when it's removed on 26th September.

As the surgeons had to cut into my gut (for the keyhole stuff), my stomach is very painful and it has
affected my posture. I'm stooped all-over and am using a walking stick to try and remain straight-backed.
