Sora 9sp to 105 11sp upgrade
« on: 20 August, 2020, 08:51:08 pm »
Evening all

Im considering a shifter upgrade on my everyday bike currently shod with a Sora groupset and TRP Spyre mechanical discs.

I had half decided to go to Tiagra 10 sp, but have identified a source of 105 11sp shifter at barely £30 more.

So, apart from the obvious mechs, cassette and chain, is there anything else i should take into account?. Is the distance between the rear drop outs the same for 11 sp?. Will Spyre work with these shifters?.

Thanks in advance

A

Dropout spacing is the same.  If the STI levers are SLR-EV, which R7000 is, you theoretically need new brake calipers too but I'd just try it and see.  The Sora front mech probably won't quite work as Shimano changed the front pull ratio for some later 10 speed stuff and I assume they didn't reverse it for 11 speed.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

An 11 speed road cassette needs longer splines than 9 speed. Check if there’s a spacer behind your existing cassette.

If there isn’t, there are some magic 11-34 cassettes that are dished to work on older free hubs with short splines.

SLR-EV calipers use the same brake cable pull as 'New Super SLR' (NSSLR) which represents all but one new STI model launched since 2008.  Spyre calipers are a good match for NSSLR levers, and a less good match for older STIs.

The current list of matching NSSLR STIs (from shimano's current compatibility charts) is

ST-R9100
ST-R9150
ST-R9160
ST-9070
ST-9071
ST-9001
ST-9000
ST-R8000
ST-R8050
ST-R8060
ST-6870
ST-6871
ST-6800
ST-6770
ST-6700
ST-5800
ST-R7000
ST-5700
ST-4700
ST-4600
ST-R3000
ST-3500
ST-R2000
ST-2400
ST-R460
ST-R353
ST-R350
BL-TT79

The 'short' 11s cassettes which fit 8/9/10s freehub bodies are CS-HG700-11 and CS-HG800-11. Both are only available in 11-34T.

Depending on what chainset you have, you may find that the trim clicks are alright or not on the front shift.[edit; even with the correct FD; it goes without saying you need the correct FD because the cable pull is different between old 9s and 11s. ] You should buy RD-R7000-GS if you are going to use an 11-34T cassette.

FWIW a few weeks ago Freewheel were doing ST-5800 STIs for just £118.

NB ongoing consumables costs for 11s are higher than for 9s, and some aspects of setup are more finicky.  It rather begs the question 'is it worth it?'.  Only you can answer that but one thing that might help is to look at the gearing charts for each setup; are you getting more useful gears? Or just more duplicates, or gears that you won't use etc?

cheers

That is what Froome uses with a compact chainset for hilly stages. He is quite fast.

Dope is a winning strategy. Ask Armstrong.

All off-topic for gearing for an everyday bike.

If you do go for it then get the whole package. F & R mechs, levers, chain, cassette... the lot.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

11-34 on a racing bike?

I run 11-40 on my racing bike...

But then I do a different style of racing to that most associated with "bike racing"

If you're old school, an 11 speed 11-34 is really just a 7 speed 11-23 with some bonus gears.

Pretend the rest are little ring on a triple or something.
