Golden Compass.

Hmmm ... 6/10.

Same problem as HP1 - too much plot-n-stuff squished into too little time. Very well executed, but ultimately a bit pointless.

Watched it last night; it was much better than I had anticipated though I had imagined Lee Scoresby to be rather younger than that.

+1 to both comments

I think that if I'd not read the books it would have been moderately incomprehensible.  It looked great, and there were some lovely touches in  the interactions of the demons, and the way those of the children changed species

We enjoyed it, but in  a very different way than we did the books.

Hidden, by Michael Haneke.  Watched it last night on DVD.  Worth watching again and again, provided you don't mind things being left completely unresolved.

It's interesting that the sequels were never made. On the face of it - it bombed in the USA, so why would you make a sequel? But worldwide, it took $320m ($180m to make).

The Wonderful World of Interweb Conspiracy theorists claim the real reason was because the Church in the USA wouldn't 'Ave it  :hand:.

I think there is some truth in that. A lot of cinemas were picketed - so cinema ticket takings were down (who wants to take kids to a family movie and have religious extremists screaming at them?).

Knowing there are no sequels makes the existing film pointless, especially as it finishes in the wrong place.  I get quite angry about this.

Yes. I watched the first instalment, and I'm now Well Up for the rest - I thought the first one was quite good.

If it's down to the God Botherers, then I'm Quiet Annoyed about that too. I mean - somehow they manage to interfere with my life and my viewing choices when I'm alive - and my death, and my own choice about that (in so far as I don't have one) - and I don't even believe in the stuff they do.

So much for freedom.

Oh. Sorry. The Rant thread is over there... I forgot.

Strictly speaking, not a film per se, but the whole series of Battlestar Galactica, blu ray box set from Amazon for £55. That's more or less the Chrimbo tv sorted

GI Joe: Rise of The Cobra.

Same comments as upthread.  Perfect Sunday night brainless fodder....

And how could you make this film better?

Maybe make a sequel?

Maybe have the White Ninja return?

And then add in the Rock AND Bruce Willis?

Yup, GI Joe:Retaliation is coming next year.....

For all the wrong reasons I am looking forward to this :)

Truly, Madly, Deeply.

Again.

Just a great movie.  Hoping it gives me lovely dreams, as I am going to bed now.

When you know what it is, to miss someone that much, you realise how great Juliet Stevenson's performance is in this film.

With added Alan Rickman.  Phwoar.

I think I should get round to buying a copy for my very own because it's so good. And it has Alan Rickman.

Captain America. Not bad, but Marvel haven't yet outdone the first Iron Man film.

The "Marvel one shot" shorts on this disc and Thor are good though. Agent Coulson gets his moment...  ;D

I know!  Alan Rickman.  Mmmm.

I have just seen SAW for the first time.  The first one, apparently.

Completely ridiculous.  What on earth is all the fuss about?  TMD is so much better in every way, than watching someone saw his own foot off.  Served him right IMO, if only because of his haircut.

the DVD is out of print as it were, when I last looked into getting a copy, prices were like £75 or so for a reasonable used example. have just had a look on Amazon, prices range from £43 to £115.....

You're kidding.  Crusty bought me my copy a few years ago for a fiver.  Dammit you can borrow mine, if you promise to send it back.  Complete with Alan, obviously.
