Inglourious Basterds

As is often the case with Kinematic Celluloids these days, it was this: about half an hour too long.

Made in Dagenham

Followed by explanation by Mrs B of how it is superior to the products of Hollywood. ;)

Not bad. I enjoyed it. Very good evocation of the period, I thought.

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood.

The film moves all over the country, which is handy as so does Russell Crowe’s accent.

Keeping Mum. A witty comedy with a cracking cast and a smart twist at the end . . .

It also haz Kristin Scott Thomas and that's all I'm saying.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

Brother Where Art Thou on DVD at the weekend.

I'd seen snippets of it before but this was the first time I'd seen it all the way through, which I'm glad I did.

OMEN III - The Final Conflict

On TV last week so I recorded it for old time's sake.
I've seen it before, I think I may have paid to see it.

There's never been a worse film made, equally bad maybe, but not worse.

The quite wonderful Moon.

Also, we started to watch Public Enemies, which I only bought cos it reminded me that I've been after the seventies movie Dillinger, starring Warren Oates, for ages.  It's not terrible, but Johnny Depp seems horribly miscast, so he simply can't carry it.  There's an enjoyable turn by Billy Crudup as a  slimy, mendacious J Edgar Hoover, and Christian Bale as his sidekick.  Hopefully there'll be more of that, but judging by what's gone so far, it won't be worth the effort.

Still, it reminded me to have another look for Dillinger, which is finally available on region 2 DVD   I hope it's worth the wait.

Last night I saw The Wildest Dream at the cinema. This is a documentary film looking at the life of George Mallory who, along with Sandy Irvine, died near the summit of Mnt. Everest in 1924. It's never been proven if the pair died on the assent or descent of the mountain. The story is taken up by an American climber (Anker) who found Mallory's body and his attempt, along with British climber Leo Houlding, to climb Everest. I remember reading a BBC news article about the successful attempt of this particular climb in 2007, but I wasn't aware it was as part of a film.

The story of Mallory and Irvine is a bit dry, but the film makes up for that with stunning shots of the beautiful mountain vistas, esp. above 8,000 m, and it also shows the suffering Houlding and Anker go through to reach the summit of Everest.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Layer Cake on TV last night when I was staying in a hotel, It past the time nicely.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Land and Freedom.

I've got issues with certain aspects of the film but some scenes hit me just as hard as the 'Play the Marseillaise" scene in Casablanca, the "Time to die" scene in Bladerunner (and, probably just me, but the bit where the Clown and the Wolfman head off for the last time in Restless Natives).

Magic stuff.

You've reminded me that I bought the dvd on ebay to rewatch this.  I saw it on the tv at around the time Manic Street Preachers released "If You Tolerate This..." (1998?).  I remember loving the film (although I don't remember many specifics) and went on to read a few books about the Spanish Civil War (Homage to Catalonia included).

Iron Man 2.  Fun.  The Monaco sequence was a pure delight.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

Tell me about it! (in fact, don't - there was nothing redeeming about it at all).

God alone knows why but I watched 'Babysitter Wanted'.  So dire I thought it was a pastiche in the 'Scary Movie' mould.
